Thanks to her diary which survived World War Two, Anne Frank has become one of the most recognizable names and faces of the Holocaust, but in recent weeks, a trend on Twitter has sought to reframe her memory as something else entirely: as a recipient of “white privilege.” This heinous rewriting of history is not only an assault on reality, but on the memory of the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust, and serves as a reminder of why accurate reporting on history is as important as it’s ever been.

In every conflict between Israel and Hamas, the world media tallies up death tolls and Israel is invariably accused of a "disproportionate response" by journalists, critics in non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and by the United Nations. But when looking at the actual casualty figures, it becomes quickly apparent that, far from being a "disproportionate response," the number of Palestinians injured or killed is actually significantly less dramatic than the news coverage would suggest, especially in comparison to worldwide deaths due to conflict. Even more so, when you look at the breakdown of casualties, there's almost a 1:1 ratio of combatant to civilian casualties, which explains why Israel has an earned moniker for being the most moral army in the world. Since the Taliban took over much of Afghanistan, the media have been mute on the alarming parallel between the Taliban and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Both regimes oppress women, persecute minorities, kill gays, jail journalists, sponsor terrorism, chant "death to the West" and call for the genocide of Jews, but the media have been mute on the disturbing similarities between these tyrannical regimes. In mid-September, a demonstration took place in downtown Ottawa calling for the destruction of Israel. Equally appalling, protestors called for the release of all Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails without distinguishing from those who have blood on their hands and are convicted terrorists. Canada is a vibrant democracy with freedom of expression and assembly, but at the very least, a demonstration replete with genocidal proclamations warrants a strong condemnation from politicians, journalists and opinion makers alike.

Last spring, a property dispute in Jerusalem flared into open conflict. A group of Palestinian-Arabs in Jerusalem, who refused to pay rent to their Jewish landlords, became heroes in some quarters, and anti-Israel activists accused the Jewish State of attempting to expel these squatters. This allegation spread around the world, and helped to spur Hamas' war against Israel. But just a few weeks ago, Hamas bulldozed the homes of dozens of Palestinian families, rendering their inhabitants homeless, all to create a new commercial area, the world media barely reported it. When false allegations against Israel easily spread around the world, why are real examples of Palestinians being evicted by Hamas going unreported?

During her 70 years on the throne as the British sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II enjoyed a close relationship with the Jewish community in the United Kingdom and around the world. The Queen showed sensitivity to Jewish concerns, and stood firmly against antisemitism. Each week, British Jews recite a prayer for the Queen, and now with her death, that prayer will now pivot to wishing for success and strength for the new monarch, King Charles III. British Jews are hopeful that their close relationship with Buckingham Palace will continue.

In early February, a devastating earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, killing at least 40,000 people and injuring more than 100,000 others. Following the deadly natural disaster, relief teams began pouring into the region from across the world. One of the largest groups came from Israel, a tiny country smaller than Vancouver Island. But this humanitarian effort from Israel is only the latest example of the Jewish State using its expertise to assist innocent people around the world after enduring a natural disaster, regardless of the politics at play.

In a recent episode of The View, actress and comedian Whoopi Goldberg made some eyebrow-raising comments about the Holocaust, saying that the murder of six million Jews was "not about race." Though she faced significant backlash, including a two-week suspension from the television program, Whoopi's ignorant comments reveal the extent to which millions of people simply don't understand the basics of antisemitism.

2021 had no shortage of major news stories, whether the insurrection of the U.S. capitol in Washington, the ongoing Covid pandemic, or the American pullout from Afghanistan, but despite these major news stories, a recent Time Magazine issue profiling 100 top news photos of the year, featured on its front cover a likely staged anti-Israel image propaganda image. In fact, three of the 100 images selected by Time Magazine editors were anti-Israel. In a year of so many important news stories, it was shameful that Time Magazine chose to single Israel out for exclusive censure and condemnation.

In January, Houthi terrorists, backed and funded by the Islamic Republic of Iran, fired missiles into Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, killing three civilians. The attack was only the latest salvo by the Houthis, but the minimal news coverage of the event means that Iran's terror funding will go ignored and the regime in Tehran will face few consequences for its nefarious actions.

More than two years afterstatingtheir intention to establish diplomatic relations, Israel and Sudan have recently announced that they plan to finalize a peace agreement by the end of 2023. Such a deal between the two countries would be very significant, not only due to the size and influence of Sudan but because the African country has long been hostile to Israel’s existence, sending soldiers to fight Israel in 1948 and being host to a famous summit in 1967, opposing all ties with the Jewish State.

In early March, the Islamic Fatwa Council, an Islamic judicial body based in Najaf, Iraq, released a fatwa, or Islamic edict, condemning the Hamas terrorist group for its “inhumane actions” in oppressing the two million Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip. Representing a wide spectrum of Sunni and Shiite Muslims, the Islamic Fatwa Council also banned followers from supporting Hamas in any way. Importantly, when a noteworthy Islamic group condemns Hamas for its inhumane treatment of Palestinians, the mainstream media must take notice.

It’s a common phrase uttered at anti-Israel rallies around the world: “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” While anti-Israel groups maintain the chant is little more than a call for support for the Palestinian cause, the truth is much darker: it’s a call for the destruction of Israel, the world’s only Jewish State. It’s time that the news media show the true face and intent of this hateful chant.

Only a few months after tacitly accusing Israel of providing Covid vaccines only to its Jewish population, Michael Che of Saturday Night Live (SNL) is at it again. In a recent episode, Che made a snide comment about Jews, once again under the pretense of humour, claiming that Jewish people in Israel can't make wine. Saturday Night Live: unlike award-winning Israeli wines, leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

On December 26, 2021, Desmond Tutu died. The South African archbishop became well known for his laudable opposition to apartheid in his homeland, and received recognition for these efforts. Unfortunately, he was also a vicious opponent of Israel's, and even made antisemitic statements. While the media is justified in recognizing the positive aspects of Tutu's work, his anti-Israel agenda severely tarnishes his legacy, and as uncomfortable as it may be, the media should not shy away from telling the full story of Desmond Tutu.

Recently, two Jews were viciously beaten in New York City because one of them was wearing an Israel Defense Forces sweater. Lest there be any doubt that the motivations were antisemitic, anti-Jewish slurs were made at the victims during the assault. Despite the cries of critics, when Jews are assaulted for daring to express their affiliation with Israel, it's antisemitism, pure and simple.

A recent Washington Post article reported that in 2020 and 2021, Israel had carried out a number of air strikes on Syrian chemical weapons sites, which effectively stopped Bashar Assad's regime from acquiring chemical weapons. It did the same in 2007, when it destroyed a nascent Syrian nuclear reactor. And although Israel receives no recognition for its actions, the reality is that thanks to the Jewish State, both Israelis and Syrians are safer as a result of the Assad regime being denied chemical weapons.

Since their inception, Palestinian terrorist groups like Hamas and Islamic Jihad have targeted Israeli civilians to maim and murder innocents. But they also abuse Palestinian civilians, both by using them as human shields and by using teens and sometimes even small children in their terrorist machinations. It's time for the news media to start telling the whole story about how Palestinian terror groups cynically use child soldiers.

For the third time in about 20 years, Joseph's Tomb, an ancient Jewish religious site located in the biblical city of Shechem, or Nablus, has been desecrated by Palestinian extremists, who attempted to set the site ablaze. Joseph's Tomb, said to be the burial place of the biblical Joseph, was attacked by Palestinian rioters in 2000, as well as in 2015. While Israel guarantees religious freedom to all faiths, the Palestinian extremists who desecrated Joseph's Tomb are a stark reminder that religious protections in the region come only from Israel.

During recent meetings in Berlin, on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the 1972 Munich Massacre, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas was asked if he would condemn the attacks when the Palestinian terrorist group Black September murdered 11 Israeli athletes and one West German police officer. In response, Abbas refused to do so and subsequently accused Israel of committing “50 Holocausts” against the Palestinians. Is this really the Palestinian leader the world and our media expect Israel to negotiate with?

On August 25, the office of Robin Wettlaufer, Canada’s diplomatic representative to the Palestinian Authority (PA), posted on Twitter a photo with Jibril Rajoub, describing him as a “great friend of Canada.” Rajoub, current head of the Palestine Olympic Committee, is a convicted terrorist with a long history of conducting armed violence against Israel, glorifying terrorism, and inciting hatred. Rajoub is certainly no friend of Canada and should be treated as a pariah.

Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has followed in the footsteps of his predecessor, Yasser Arafat, by preaching peace to global audiences, all while inciting hatred and violence against Israelis when speaking primarily to Palestinian and other friendly audiences. As long as Abbas continues to preach hate towards Israel and Jews, peace will continue to be as elusive as ever. When will the news media report the true face of Mahmoud Abbas?

In a world of nearly 8 billion people, and more than 200 countries, the only Jewish state, with a small population, attracts condemnation and hate immensely disproportionate to its size, but why? None of the accusations made against Israel can justify this outsized hatred, and it's time for the media to stand up and say so.

When a recent video hack revealed widespread torture at an Iranian prison, Iranian officials wasted no time in speaking out against the incident. For decades, the Islamic Republic of Iran has used torture with brutal effectiveness against its own people and to intimidate its population into silence. Will the news media report this incident as having been isolated or as being systemic and reflective of the true face of the Iranian regime?
