East Pierce crews were dispatched to a service call for a dog on the ice on Lake Tapps near the 20400 block of Church Lake Dr E in Bonney Lake. Callers to 911 reported seeing the dog fall through the ice twice and managed to pull itself out but would not come to shore when called. Firefighters wore dry suits and were creative using ropes and body boards to reach the dog. At one point the pooch was about 400 feet from shore. The female dog is not micro-chipped, looks to be about a year old, and possibly a Shar Pai mix breed. She is safe at the Metro Animal Services shelter in Puyallup. Bob the dog loves the water but the ice shelf prevented him from being able to get out after his polar plunge. Please be safe with your pets and children as ice conditions are still not as safe as we’d like them to be. Firefighter Logan did a fantastic job today helping Bob. Street Department members rescued a distressed owl outside the public works building. City employee Tony Carusa and Doug Thrasher safely captured the owl, following guidance from the World Bird Sanctuary. The owl, identified as patient 24-011, was found cold and severely weakened, with signs of a previous right leg injury. WPD, animal control and WFD teamed up for a pretty sweet rescue Monday afternoon. A labradoodle had gotten away from its owner while on a walk and ended up jumping into the freezing cold Detroit River. The poor pooch somehow managed to climb onto a chunk of ice but it was drifting away in the river while the dog was freezing. Rescuers were able to move the ice close to the riverbank and snagged the dog around its neck with a “catchpole”. The rescuer did this while standing on a slippery ladder that was submerged in the river while his coworkers held onto him via a rope. Truly an amazing and awesome rescue. University Circle Police received a notification from the shuttle bus driver about a cat trapped inside a parked vehicle. UCPD officers were dispatched to the scene and successfully rescued the kitten within an hour, with one officer having to crawl under the bus to free the feline. An ice rescue unfolded in Colorado Springs, Colo., when a dog plunged into a frozen pond. Concerned park-goers promptly dialed 911 for assistance. The footage captures a firefighter, securely tethered to a lifeline, bravely immersing himself into the icy waters to rescue the stranded canine. After successfully grasping the K-9, both rescuer and dog were safely pulled back to solid ground. Despite enduring a chilly and frightening afternoon, the dog seemed to be in good condition. Wausau Police Department received a "tail" of a deer who was in need of some assistance. Officer Price got to the scene to offer a helping hoof. With some gentle persuasion, he got our furry friend unstuck and back to nature's "grazing grounds." Remember, even our wildlife needs a hand sometimes!
