The Deer Valley Unified School District saw about 400 students come into their school system in the last year and a half. Stetson Hills School saw the most students from Taiwan with about 100 in the last year, and it’s been an adjustment for both the schools and Taiwanese students. “My classmates are so friendly, and my teachers are so patient and caring and nice,” said Victoria Lai, a third grader from Taiwan now learning at Stetson Hills.

An infant is alive today after a Mesa Police Department officer and good Samaritan intervened when he stopped breathing earlier this summer. Mesa police say an officer was at a light rail station in late July to deal with a situation involving a non-compliant passenger when two women came running towards him. Body camera video shows the women handing over a baby boy who had reportedly stopped breathing. The officer began life-saving efforts on the child before a bystander, who said he was a retired paramedic, moved in to help.

According to the annual Point-In-Time Homelessness Count done by the Maricopa Association of Governments, there are 366 people living on the streets of Mesa as of 2023. That's a drop from 2022.

Arizona State Superintendent announces $40M tutoring program to recover from learning loss
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne has announced a $40-million project to help minimize the impacts of learning loss during the COVID-19 pandemic. The money will be available to elementary school students for free tutoring in reading, writing and math beginning Oct. 2, 2023, Horne said on Tuesday. Officials estimate the $40-million program will pay for 1.3 million hours of tutoring.
