The vast majority of the time and electrical system is being underutilized. Most electrical systems barely run any loads throughout the day so there’s really no reason to calculate things at the max capacity of the system. Code allows us to derate some things to account for this. There are two methods of coming up with service ratings, one is what we call the Standard Method and the other is the Optional Method. The National Electrical Code allows us to figure out what types of loads will be utilized and accounts for many of the other loads that are not likely to run with the rest. We’ll cover these in a later video. #electrician #electrical #breakers

After a certain amount of time in the field, we get a minute understanding of what the different colored wires are and what their general function is. Our ungrounded conductors, or hots, carry current to equipment. The grounding conductor, or the ground, is intended to carry current in a ground fault situation and physically bond our system to the earth. But what exactly does that ungrounded, or neutral, conductor do? Where do we get a neutral from? This is a more often than not kind of service call we can expect. Adding another receptacle, adding another switch: it is the same method employed. A good note when cutting into the drywall is to locate your stud. More than likely, the outlet box will be nailed to a stud on one side of the other. If you can't visibly see it, try to take your keyhole saw and run it up the sides of the box. You should be stopped by a nail or some type of fastener. Very little difference when we see a Main Breaker and a Main Lug Only panel, but their applications vary quite a bit. Most uses of a Main Lug Only, or MLO, consist of remote distribution panels, or sub panels as we call them in the trade. More often than not, we will come across a Main Breaker Panel, or MBP. The most important thing to remember about These panels It's to deenergize the bus or everything downstream of thing down stream of the breaker. The way of terminating In these panels is also a little different. In a main breaker panel we terminate the grounds onto a groundbar and the neutrals onto a neutral bar and if it's our 1st means of disconnect we also bond the neutral and grounds together. And we terminate the ungrounded conductors onto the main breaker as normal. In a main log only panel, The main logs are attached straight to the bus bar and cannot be switched off at that panel location. The grounds and neutrals would not be bonded together in this panel in this panel because it would not be the 1st means of disconnect. A curious thing the language of the code is. Huge shout out to Jay Carter for dropping a code ref in last week's episode! Anytime we are out in the field, or on social media, you know the good electricians by how they handle criticisms. That's not saying at one time, someone knew the code and their knowledge is just outdated, or someone is just being a troll. Today we get to explore the historic sights of Massachusetts! Some insane code violations were found like the Article 358 on EMT. Awesome creative ideas for black pipe? to galvanized pipe, to a j-box. We also saw some condenser equipment mounted one what would be the second story. In today's episode, we had the opportunity to install a disconnect for a mini-split. When working with multiple trades on a small job like this, it's important to keep communication open. Knowing what the HVAC tech will need as far as space and height will give us a good idea where to mount our disconnect. You will also note that we used a selection of conduit bodies in this run. As mentioned in the video, these conduit bodies are not designed to accommodate splices. There are some that do allow for splices and taps; the manufacturer is required to permanently print the cubic area on the conduit body, junction box, and pull box. Another important aspect to keep in mind is the type of wire being pulled through our conduit. Torquing is a much-overlooked aspect in the daily work of an electrician. We torque the important things like service conductors and circuit feeders; but what about everything else? Every material, every device, every box has a torque recommendation from the manufacturer that we either overlook because we deem it unimportant, or don't recognize the manufacturer has a requirement. As many of us as aware, the material used in this episode is commonly used for commercial wiring; but because of price at time of posting, we decided to run with MC Cable instead of typical NM-B. These cable assemblies are very similar pertaining to code i.e. distance from box to be stapled, distance between staples, bend radius, and so on. Another thing to notice is lay out of lighting. There's a couple different methods use to lay out lighting such as marking them on trusses, or marking it out on the floor. Several things to mention here: when marking out on the floor, be sure the floor is level when using a laser level to transfer the mark upwards. An unlevel surface will result, notice I said WILL result, in a point being obscured and out of line. Say you have a mark 1/16th out of level, and you're transferring to a 16 foot high ceiling. That mark will be out of line by 1" or greater by the time it hits the desired height. Another thing to watch for is when marking out with a tape measure up high, it is beneficial to use a helper when pulling measurements so the clip on the tape measure doesn't come off. Also, be sure to pull your tape tight, or as to not have sag in the center. A good way to avoid this is to pull measurements from above the trusses and let your tape measure be supported. In this video, we recount my trip to NECA - the National Electrical Contractors Association.
