Until the War on Terrorism, Vietnam was the longest conflict in American history. By the end of that war in April 1975, 57,939 would be killed or missing in action, with an estimated 250,000 South Vietnamese soldiers also dead. The Gulf of Tonkin incident sparked the great conflict that had been a series of small counterinsurgency missions. This event was the reason that President Lyndon B. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returned from exile in France, installed a militant Islamist government while the Shah was allowed to arrive in New York for cancer treatments. Infuriated that the Shah would not be returned to Iran to stand trial the anti-Shah pro-Islamists stormed the U.S. embassy and seized 66 hostages on November 4, 1979, holding mostly State Department personnel, Marines and local and foreign national employees. The West African Trans-Atlantic slave trade seems to be the only version that is taught or even discussed. However, the East African slave trade, conducted by the Muslims lasted much longer, and saw more human beings sold into slavery than any other location in history beginning in the late 8th century. It has been estimated that during this period at least 18 million Africans were captured and sold by the Arab Muslims who dominated north and east Africa, and the practice still exists in the shadows today. When John F. Kennedy took the oath of office as president of the United States, he inherited a very dangerous world. The Cold War was at its height, Cuba had turned communist under Fidel Castro, and the Soviet Union was increasing its presence just under 90 miles off the coast of Florida. The failure of the CIA backed invasion reduced the image of American power in its own hemisphere, created a communist hero out of Fidel Castro, and emboldened the Soviet Union to make even greater gains into the Caribbean, especially in Cuba challenging American power which led to the Cuban Missile Crisis.
