"It's a well-known fact that the state can't do business properly," says Kühne, who believes he can distribute his money better himself. They share a common ideology and vision of totalitarian power yet reportedly, Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko hate each other. As popular opposition in Belarus and the war in Ukraine force them closer and closer together, we examine the relationship between these two men. We also look back at Lukashenko’s rise to power and hear from some of the protestors brave enough to oppose him. Filmed undercover in Belarus in the weeks up to and just after the invasion of Ukraine. From her exile in Lithuania, a mother recounts how the KGB came looking for her four-year-old son. When a video of Victor attending a protest was seen on social media, the KGB sent photos of him to every kindergarten in Minsk asking the teachers to identify him. They escaped in time but Victor’s father was arrested and imprisoned for attending the same protest. Also in prison is Daria’s husband, Igor, an independent journalist who ran an information channel on the internet. Although he never overtly criticised the regime, he was still given a 15 year prison sentence. It was the grounding of a Ryan Air flight to arrest journalist Roman Protasevich that provoked stiff sanctions from Europe. In retaliation, Lukashenko lured tens of thousand of refugees from the Middle East and sent them towards Poland. When people started dying in the sub zero temperatures, he blamed Europe and went to play ice hockey with Vladimir Putin. It was a public sign of support from the Kremlin for a man they are bound to support. Without Russia’s aid, the 2020 popular protests would probably have ended Lukashenko’s regime. In return, Lukashenko has not only allowed Russia to station troops in Belarus, a recently held referendum also links the consolidation of his power with military support for Russia. It enables Lukashenko to stay in power until 2035 and Belarus to host Russian nuclear weapons. The Kremlin knows that any replacement would likely be pro-Western. Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, Belarus’ President-in-Exile, has promised to cut the links with the Kremlin and denounced the invasion of Ukraine. From her base in Vilnius, she tells how she is trying to prevent her country becoming a Russian proxy and how opposition figures abroad are constantly targeted. In Belarus, everyone knows they live under constant surveillance, ruled by a government that has lost its legitimacy and governs through force. As Grad shells and mortar rounds coming from Ukraine damaged dams and water reservoirs, the entire Donbass was eventually cut off from its water supply. This is when volunteers came to the rescue. ‘I am a very happy person, especially now that we have water. With my mother bedridden, I really didn't know what to do, and so… But now, they’re pumping well-water through the pipes’, says Viktoria Kvasnikova, a local village resident. Volunteers drilled a well in her backyard, and, after months without water Viktoria can finally get it without risking her life. Like many other Donbass citizens, she got used to constant Ukrainian shelling and finally being able to have easy water access was a great joy. Since the spring of 2022, Novruz and his 9-year-old son Elnur - despite the risk involved - constantly look for water and deliver up to 27 barrels per day to the bombed areas. Volunteers who help with water supplies say any stationary equipment for drilling wells is immediately attacked by the Ukrainians. All work has to be done quickly and discreetly. However, no matter the risk, volunteers continue to deliver water to more and more Donbass residents. What drives these people to help others at their own peril?

It was hard to believe that some of the gold medal winners had been wounded in World War II or nearly starved during the siege of Leningrad. A number had even survived multiple Nazi concentration camps. Often underweight and ill-equipped, these spirited young men and women ended up taking 20 Gold, 30 Silver, and 19 Bronze. Two of this legendary team’s members describe how they overcame hardships to achieve remarkable victories for their country.

The film Stolen Brides, Stolen Lives is a follow-up to the 2013 RT Documentary, which examined the phenomenon of girl abduction in Kyrgyzstan. The Ala kachuu, or “grab and run” custom has young men abducting girls and marrying them against their will. The traditional lifestyle in Kyrgyzstan makes the fight for equality and human rights for girls more complicated. Until recently, the penalty for kidnapping was less than for stealing cattle. However, human rights advocates managed to establish a ten-year sentence for kidnappers. Still, even when formal justice is served, the girls have to endure a lot of humiliation with their families, their social circle and even the authorities. Commonly the police don’t take reports of Ala kachuu seriously; they laugh and joke about it. They know their negligence will not be punished. Religious elders don’t condone the kidnapping. However, a mullah often makes a house call and weds the couple without asking the girl’s consent. According to the Kyrgyz Ministry of the Interior, domestic violence has increased 62% during the COVID lockdown. The Ministry cites over 8,000 cases a year. But human rights advocates claim the numbers are significantly higher — tens of thousands of cases. The best way to reduce these numbers is to educate both young men and women about their rights and that everyone is equal before the law.
