Since Israel’s founding, ultra-Orthodox Jews in the country have been exempt from serving in the military so they can better devote themselves to religious study. Today they number some 66,000 but last month, Israel's top court effectively lifted that exemption, triggering huge protests from the Orthodox community. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has until the end of the month to agree on a new conscription plan.

Inside Edition: Pro-Palestinian protests are continuing to gain traction on college campuses. Protesters clashed with police at NYU as cops tore down a tent city. Over 100 people were arrested as police filled the streets around NYU. At Columbia University, dozens of tents are packed tightly together and conditions are becoming unsanitary. The toxic atmosphere is prompting some of Columbia University's billionaire donors to withhold their financial support. Inside Edition’s Steven Fabian has more.

Nearly 60,000 people have been evacuated from their homes in China, after days of heavy rain caused flooding in the Guangdong province. At least three people have died, and 11 people are missing, according to state media. Several major rivers have burst their banks, and authorities are closely monitoring "dangerously high" water levels. Much of Guangdong is part of the low-lying Pearl River delta, which is prone to floods due to the rise in sea levels and storm surges. It is also one of the country’s most densely-populated regions, with Guangdong alone home to around 127 million people.

Myanmar resistance fighters raised their own banner at a newly captured army base, as a senior rebel commander vowed they would hold the strategic area near the Thai border.

The United States and the Philippines are set to begin their annual ‘Balikatan’ – or “shoulder-to-shoulder” - military exercises. These are the most expansive military drills yet, and come amid a rise in tensions between China and the Philippines. This year’s drills will include the first-ever military exercises held outside of Philippine territorial waters, in the South China Sea. Those are waters are partly claimed by Beijing. The US and the Philippines have a longstanding mutual defense treaty and at a recent summit in Washington, US President Joe Biden said his country’s commitments to Manila were “ironclad”.

Two alleged spies suspected of planning to sabotage German military aid for Ukraine have been arrested in the southern German state of Bavaria. The two men, described as dual German-Russian nationals, were detained in Bayreuth on suspicion of spying for Russia, prosecutors say. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said authorities had prevented "possible explosive attacks". The Russian ambassador has been summoned by the foreign ministry in Berlin.

Associated Press: Iraqi authorities said Saturday that they are investigating an explosion that struck a base belonging to the Popular Mobilization Forces, a coalition of Iran-allied militias, overnight, killing one person and injuring eight.

Israel’s top general has given the clearest indication that the country will retaliate against Iran, following its mass missile and drone attack. General Herzi Halevi, the IDF chief os staff, said that “the launch of so many missiles, cruise missiles and drones into Israeli territory will be met with a response”. It’s not yet clear what form that response will take. The United States has described the Iranian attack as “a spectacular failure”. Around 300 missiles and drones were fired at Israel but almost all were shot down or failed to reach their targets. A handful evaded air defences but caused little damage. President Biden and other national leaders have urged Israel to show restraint and to avoid escalation. They fear the crisis could lead to a wider war in the region. Fighting in Myanmar is escalating between the military junta and rebel groups in the east. The violence has been focused near the border town of Myawaddy -- an important trade hub and source of revenue for the cash-strapped military. Rebels say hundreds of soldiers have surrendered. Thailand has increased security along its border in the city of Mae Sot, as people in Myanmar try to flee the fighting. The rebel groups have made significant gains in recent weeks, weakening the military's grip on power. Al Jazeera’s Tony Cheng has been following this story from the Thai border city of Mae Sot.
