It takes too long to build in America. 90 years ago, American workers built the Empire State Building in about 400 days. Think we could do it that fast today? One of the reasons we can’t is because of overregulation from government bureaucrats. Pretty much every time we build something in this country--a road, a pipeline, a power line--it gets held up for an average of 5 years. 5 YEARS. So bureaucrats in Washington can write 600 pages of Environmental Impact Statements and leave projects vulnerable to endless lawsuits. It's costly, it's not based on sound science, and Democrats and Republicans can all agree it's holding us back. Fortunately, there’s a common sense solution: permitting reform, which Republicans have included in H.R. 1 - the Lower Energy Costs Act. The Senate just followed the House’s lead and rejected Biden’s “WOTUS” rule. This would roll back some of the Biden Administration’s overreaching regulations that expand the federal government’s authority over many waterways in the U.S. Basically, the Biden rule hurts farmers, small businesses, construction companies, and water districts, by needlessly complicating our already complex permitting process. In effect: projects get delayed and become drastically more expensive, while environmental extremists grow emboldened. Americans are already struggling under President Biden’s anti-growth agenda. Your government should be making it easier—not harder—to produce, work, and thrive in America. I am going to sign this resolution, and I congratulate Chairman Sam Graves, Congressman David Rouzer, and the many Republican lawmakers who worked hard to stop government overreach and restore some common sense to Washington.

It costs too much to heat your home and fill up your tank. The Lower Energy Costs Act does two important things. One – it restores American energy leadership by repealing unnecessary taxes and overregulation on American energy producers so we can lead the world in providing clean, affordable energy. Two – it makes it easier to build things in America by requiring a two year time limit on environmental impact statements and streamlines the process for lawsuits so activists can’t use the courts to delay projects for years.

It’s a good day in America for parents and students.

The House of Representatives is about to vote on H.R. 5, the Parents Bill of Rights. It doesn’t matter the color of your skin, the zip code you live in, or the wealth you have. As a parent, you should have a right to know what's going on inside your child's classroom.

The media loves to talk about how divided Washington is. It makes for good TV. But when Republicans and Democrats come together to do something positive, you deserve to know about that too. Rising crime has affected nearly every community in America, and in Washington, DC, things have really gotten out of control. According to DC’s Chief of Police, the average homicide suspect in DC has been arrested 11 times prior to committing murder. 11 times! So when the DC City Council passed a soft-on-crime law to reduce penalties and let criminals out of jail, Congress passed a resolution to overturn it. I've signed it and sent it to the President, who has said publicly he would sign it too. Public safety isn’t about politics. Carjackers don’t ask your political party before they beat you up and steal your wheels. When you visit your capital, you should feel safe. And the law enforcement officers working day and night should know that as Speaker, I will always back the blue.

Do you have a 401k? Or some kind of retirement plan through work? If so, what I'm about to tell you affects you directly. A new regulation from the Biden Administration allows your retirement savings to be used to fund a political agenda you may not agree with. It lets Wall Street redirect your money into something called “ESG” investments. The goal of these funds isn’t to maximize your returns or grow your savings relative to other funds. These are woke priorities whose primary purpose is to push far-left political activism. But there’s good news. Republicans AND a few free-thinking Democrats voted to block Biden’s woke ESG rule. The House and Senate both passed it. I just signed it. And now it goes to the President’s desk. Unfortunately, he is threatening to use his first veto against it. I hope he changes his mind and sides with American workers over Wall Street. If not, it will really show us where his priorities lie.

Every piece of legislation is assigned a number when it’s first introduced. Most of these numbers are chronological. But as Speaker, I get to pick which bills are assigned the numbers 1 through 10 as a way to signal how important that legislation is. I just announced H.R. 1 - our top legislative priority that has a real shot at becoming law. It’s called the Lower Energy Costs Act, and it’s going to do two big things: One - Restore American energy leadership. How? By repealing onerous taxes and overregulation on American energy producers so we can lead the world in providing clean, affordable energy. Two - Make it easier to build stuff in America. Every time we need a pipeline, road, or dam, an average of almost 5 years and millions of dollars in costs get added to the project to comply with Washington's permitting process. That’s too long. We can streamline permitting and still protect the environment. That’s a goal worthy of the number 1.

With the repeal of the soft-on-crime DC criminal code, this new Republican Congress is sending a message: We back the blue—and we will fight to keep communities across America safe.
