Because all good stories involve pirates. There have, on occasion, been true naval battles between pirate ships and naval men-of-war, and one notable example some have argued, marked the end of the golden age of piracy.

1944 Battle of Kansas
Over the period of February and March, 1944 the US Army Air force fought a desperate battle in extreme conditions that, while unlike many other battles of 1944, was nonetheless as significant as almost any of those battles.

The Day Niagara Falls Ran Dry
The name Niagara Falls is derived from a native American word that means “a thundering noise.” You can imagine the surprise of area residents, therefore, when, just after midnight on March 30, 1848, the thunder suddenly stopped.

The M2-F1, NASA's "Flying Bathtub."
In its 64 years of existence, NASA has tested some truly innovative and inspiring ideas. None, perhaps, were more radically weird than the wingless “flying bathtub,” towed by a hopped up Pontiac Catalina. It was a little remembered low-budget program in a time when NASA and the entire idea of space travel was radically different than what we see today- a time when pure engineering enthusiasm could make a bathtub fly.

RAF Bomber Command and the "Night of the Strong Winds."
The night of March 24 marked the last large raid by Bomber Command on the German capital. One last try that would provide a unique challenge to 811 British and Commonwealth aircrews in what Bomber Command called “the night of the strong winds.”

The GM "X-Body" and the U.S. Automotive "Malaise."
In 1979 General Motors introduced a radical concept across multiple brands intended to compete with the small imports: an American built, front wheel drive platform for the mainstream, mass-produced market. That attempt to right the ship of American auto manufacturing would almost sink it.

Fire Aboard HMS Queen Charlotte
A terrifying tale from the Age of Sail. The website of the Penobscot maritime museum was likely being deliberately understated when they wrote: “As one can imagine, wooden ships and fire do not make for a good day at sea.” The fire aboard HMS Queen Charlotte is history that deserves to be remembered.

Making Maine
It is March 13, and 346 years ago today the Massachusetts bay colony made a novel purchase. Boston Magazine wrote in 2014: “On March 13, 1677, the imperial dreams of Massachusetts came to fruition. For on that day, our colony bought Maine for £1,250 sterling.”

A half century after Marco Polo's journey, a Muslim scholar little known here in the west traveled more than four times as far. Like Marco Polo, the record of his journey provides in some cases the only remaining written account of exotic places and people.

Mustard: A Spicy History
In 2018 The Atlantic observed “For some Americans, a trip to the ballpark isn’t complete without the bright-yellow squiggle of French’s mustard atop a hot dog... Yet few realize that this condiment has been equally essential—maybe more so—for the past 6,000 years."

Loco-Focos and the 1837 New York Flour Riot
The “Flour riot” is not as well known as more destructive New York City riots of the nineteenth century like the Astor Place riots or the draft riots, but some of the story- from concern over high prices of food to accusations of fake news, to inflammatory speeches, seem surprisingly familiar today.

1961 Sooty Shearwater Attack on Capitola
Use my link to install Angry Birds Friends for FREE: https://rov.io/historyguy and enjoy popping those piggies!”
On August 18, 1961 the Santa Cruz California Sentinel reported a startling event: “Residents, especially in the pleasure point and Capitola area, were awakened about 3 am today by the rain of birds slamming against their homes.” The 1961 Sooty Shearwater attack on Capitola, that possibly inspired one of the most famous “natural horror” movies ever made, deserves to be remembered.

The Pirate Monk and Robin Hood

While there is disagreement over whether the character of Robin Hood is based on a real person, it is clear that the legend was inspired by literary works that predate the Robin Hood legend, some based on real people. One of those was a thirteenth century romance written in verse about a surprisingly Robin Hoodish French nobleman who for a time led a merry band of thieves in the forest engaging in very Robin Hoodish antics. But this particular rogue then realized something that Robin Hood did not- that all good stories involve pirates.

On today’s episode, The History Guy tells three stories surrounding Pearl Harbor. First, he’ll tell the story of the unsung heroics of the Sikorsky JRS-1s, small, unarmed planes that faced incredible danger during and after the attack on December 7th. Then he’ll tell the story of two pilots who got into the air that fateful day: George Welch and Kenneth Taylor. Finally, he’ll tell the story of one of the Pearl Harbor Battleships sunk that day, the only battleship to also shell the shores of Normandy on D-Day.
