The Ghost Ship of Diamond Shoals
On January 31st, 1921, a Coast Guard surfman sighted a vessel trapped on North Carolina’s infamous Diamond Shoals. Owing to bad weather, a Coast Guard boat was not able to reach the stranded vessel until February 4. When they boarded the ship, the crew was missing. How the “Ghost Ship of Diamond Shoals” came to be stranded, and what happened to her crew, is an enduring mystery.

USS Tennessee
USS Tennessee was already an aging vessel when she was moored alongside USS West Virginia and ahead of USS Arizona on December 7, 1941. But the "Big Ten" would not only survive the attack, she would go on to participate in more battles and fire more salvos than any other US battleship of the Second World War.

1951 C-124 disappearance
At 1:06 am on March 23rd. 1951, a C-124 Globemaster II of the United States Air Force, bound from Maine to the United Kingdom, sent a routine message to oceanic control in Ireland, providing a revised estimated time of arrival. The plane, with 53 people aboard, never reached its destination. The fate of the plane and men has become one of the enduring mysteries of the United States Air Force.

On July 20, 1969, at 10:56 PM, eastern time, television images of Neil Armstrong were broadcast world wide as he put his foot on the lunar surface. But there is far more to the program that represented mankind's first extra-terrestrial steps than that first one. And one mission is perhaps more forgotten than others, because of the coincidence of history.

San Diego's Hurricane Giraffes
In 1938, the merchant steamer SS Robin Goodfellow was caught in the Great New England Hurricane. On board the ship were some unique passengers: two Giraffes. Those Giraffes, caught in a storm that killed hundreds of people, were en route to San Diego, California, and the storm was only the beginning of their cross-country journey.

Among London's many problems as it grew at the beginning of the nineteenth century was travel between the two banks of the river Thames, which held important ports that could accept shipping coming up the river from the channel. Bridges would interfere with that important trade, so in the years of the 19th century engineers began to examine the only other option: instead of going over, going under the river.

The Badger Ordnance Works
Moving the US to a war footing before and during the Second World War was probably the largest industrial shift in American history. In rural Wisconsin, the largest munition factory in the world sprung up as if out of nowhere, just one of many military facilities the size of cities built to help meet the needs of a global war.
Special thank you to Badger History Group Inc. https://www.badgerordnancehistory.org/about_us-1d.html
The Museum of Badger Army Ammunition would not exist without the stories of the Badger Ordnance Works/Badger Army Ammunition Plant (BOW/BAAP). Those of you watching this on YouTube would not be, because without the BOW/BAAP this story would not exist. We have been told that the Badger History Group, Museum of Badger Army Ammunition is the only museum dedicated to telling the story of one of these Ammo Plants. -Verlyn Mueller

Sinking of SMS Grosser Kurfürst, 1878
The Ironclad Turret Ship SMS Grosser Kurfurst, or “Great Elector" was commissioned on May 6, 1878, just in time to participate in the Imperial German Navy’s summer training cruise. That cruise would prove disastrous for both the ship and the Navy.

Human Zoos and Ota Benga
In September of 1906, visitors to the Bronx Zoo found a new exhibit. Standing in a cage in the Monkey House was not an animal, but a young man, dressed in a loincloth and holding a bow with arrows. Though many details of his life are uncertain, what we do know of Ota Benga is a tragic story of a man who suffered much at the hands of his fellow men. It is history that deserves to be remembered.

Last Cruise of USS Saginaw
On December 19, 1870 a small boat arrived off the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Caught in the breakers, the vessel capsized, and its crew of five men were thrown into the ocean. Three drowned, one died of his injuries, and just one man, described as a starved, emaciated skeleton, crippled by a splinter in his leg, was found alive by an island local. That man, Coxswain William Halford, USN, told an incredible story of survival, and of an urgent mission.

Harald Hardrada: King of Norway
The year 1066 has become indelibly linked to William the Conqueror, the Norman King who by his victory at Hastings seized the English throne. But for every event that becomes gilded in history as a turning point, there were thousands of others overshadowed, and one such event happened only weeks before that fateful battle and involved the same English King, but instead of securing everlasting glory, it ended the career of a Viking king.

Following the powerful but short lived Qin Dynasty, the Han dynasty is often seen as a Golden Age, with significant scientific advancement and economic prosperity. This included pivotal events which would help establish the Silk road. But as with all things in history, old eras come to an end, and new ones rise. In the second century AD the dynasty faced a series of crises that threatened to end the empire. Control over the southern portion of the empire was decided in a legendary battle nearly forgotten here in the West: The Battle of Red Cliffs.

1882 Dubuque Frog Hail
Severe weather comes in many forms, and affects humans and the environment in many ways,. But some types of severe weather are simply so odd, such bizarre examples of the complexity of nature, that they deserve to be remembered. Like that time, in Dubuque Iowa, when hail included live frogs.

Evacuation Day: A forgotten American Holiday
November 25 was celebrated as a holiday in America for more than a century, and not because of Thanksgiving. In1783, the United States had much to celebrate, and owed a unique debt to a young sergeant, a largely forgotten hero named John Van Arsdale. The History Guy recalls a forgotten American holiday.

The Ghost Fleet of Mallows Bay
On the Maryland side of the Potomac river in Charles County, Maryland, there is a shallow bay tucked between Sandy and Liverpool point. Partially hidden in the muck and largely submerged, this unassuming bay holds a unique secret: the “largest shipwreck fleet in the Western Hemisphere”.

The Forgotten 1202 earthquake
For most of human history, the disasters wrought by nature were utterly unpredictable, their causes wholly unknown. They were merely a random act of God that could lay waste to whole cities without warning. On the morning of May 20, 1202, thousands of people across an enormous swath of the Earth experienced such destruction.

The Other Tea Parties
Though by far the most famous, the protest in Boston Harbor was only one of many ‘tea parties’ that followed all over the American colonies. The History Guy remembers the forgotten history of the "other" tea parties.
