Fun to play endangered sea turtle ball
Hawksbill sea turtles are critically endangered. They are gorgeous, with ornately patterned shells and a unique facial structure, resembling the beak of a predatory bird. This striking beauty has caused a dramatic population decline for the hawksbills. They were already facing a threat due to meat and egg harvests, and they were placed at greater risk when their shells became the much sought-after material used to make jewelry boxes and hair clips. In the last century, their numbers plummeted, and they were on the brink of extinction.
Conservation efforts and increased protection laws have helped this beautiful animal begin a comeback. These two turtles are actually success stories due to the efforts of researchers and rehab workers in Papua New Guinea. They were given critical care in their early years and then released back into the wild in a remote part of Kimbe Bay. Scuba divers visit the island where they live to document and study the wildlife and the ecosystem in this area. The turtles still trust humans, and they approach them curiously, looking for food and interaction. The turtles are interested in what the divers are looking at, and they will often swim between the divers and their photography subjects, competing for the attention of the divers. It is believed that these turtles remember the trust that they were shown, and they respond with particular interest to the specific diver that played a direct role in their upbringing and release.
Hawksbill sea turtles are among the most beautiful and beloved animals in the ocean. To interact with turtles like this on their own terms is a beautiful and memorable experience.

Marine iguanas of the Galápagos Islands are a wonder of evolvution
Marine iguanas are fascinating animals that exist in only one place on earth; the Galápagos Islands. They are descended from regular iguanas but they have changed over time so that they can thrive in this beautiful, but hostile environment.
During the dry season there is little vegetation growing in this harsh climate. Food is scarce and competition for what little nourishment there is can be tremendous.
Marine iguanas evolved to be able to live on algae, but the catch is that the algae grows only underwater. The iguanas learned to feed when the tide receded, but competition drove them to seek out algae that grew outside of the intertidal zones. Marine iguanas have developed an ability to hold their breath for up to 30 minutes, allowing them to swim out beyond the surf and into a world full of food. They are able to dive as deep as 30m (100 feet) in search of food. Because the waters around the Galapagos Islands are cold, the iguanas must store up body heat by basking in the sun each morning before venturing out to feed.
Eventually, cold will drive them back onto land where they will stretch out on lava rocks to warm up again. Females and juvenile iguanas are not strong enough to withstand the crashing waves and strong currents as they seek algae. They feed closer to shore in calmer waters and leave the deeper algae to the larger males. Marine iguanas have also evolved to have long, powerful claws so that they can anchor themselves in the surge. Their mouths have shortened and become more suited for chewing on the plant growth that exists on the rock surfaces underwater. These iguanas, and the other animals of the Galapagos Islands helped Charles Darwin form his theory of evolution that changed the way we thing about our planet, as well as our own origins.

Have you ever seen a butler wandering in the sky in search of food?
If you have ever watched a Bateleur circling the skies in search of food, you might have noticed how they do it so effortlessly with hardly any wing flaps? Well they have to wait for the air to warm up enough, and for thermals of warm air to start rising to do that. In the early morning while it's still cool, they are tree-bound while they wait for the day to warm up. It is a great time to catch up on some hygiene and bonding though. 😃

Gigantic whale shark casually swims past scuba divers
Whale sharks are the animals that are most deserving of the name "gentle giants". They grow to an incredible 18m (55 feet) in length and can reach an estimated weight of more than 42,000kg (100,000lbs). They are known to travel great distances and they occupy all tropical and sub tropical oceans. Yet very little is known about how they reproduce or why they congregate in the Galapagos Islands as they do.
Three strong ocean currents converge in the remote islands of Darwin and Wolf in the Galapagos. Part of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands straddle the equator, yet the Humboldt current brings cold water to this area and it creates a unique and surprisingly temperate climate in an area that would be expected to be one of the warmest regions on the planet. These currents bring an abundance of plankton, fish, and other food sources for marine animals of all kinds. It would be the perfect environment for a whale shark to thrive, coming here what would be perfect feeding grounds. Yet, whale sharks are not seen feeding in these plankton-rich waters.
Almost all of the whale sharks found here are pregnant females, ready to give birth to their pups. But researchers and scientists will almost never witness this miracle in action, and they don't even know where the young go in the first months of their lives.
Scuba divers also congregate in these waters, traveling from all over the world, hoping to catch even a glimpse of one of these goliaths as they slowly swim through the area. Whale shark sightings are a bucket list item for scuba and nature enthusiasts. These lucky divers were treated to more than a glimpse as this magnificent lady casually cruised right up to them and circled around as if she was inspecting them. Fearless, the whale sharks do not see people as a threat. They are so massive that a clumsy person in the water could do them no harm. This is mutual, as whale sharks do not possess teeth, or even the ability to harm people, except for the possibility of a collision.
These giants are filter feeders, feeding by opening their mouths wide to capture eggs, plankton, and small fish. They have little ability to defend themselves against predators, except by out swimming them, or diving deeper than their predators can go.
These gentle beasts are truly awe inspiring to witness in their natural environment.

Shark aggressively bumps scuba diver's camera in Belize
Reef sharks are one of the ocean's most magnificent predators. They are sleek and graceful in their movements, and frighteningly powerful. With rows or razor sharp teeth and tremendous jaw strength, they are formidable hunters. But they are also one of the ocean's most misunderstood animals.
Shark attacks on humans are rare. Unprovoked attacks are even more rare. For the most part, sharks are scavengers and opportunistic feeders that prey on the weak and dying creatures. In this way, they keep populations healthy, ensuring that only the strongest of a species is allowed to reproduce. Without sharks, many animal populations would not be kept in check and the effect on the balance of the reef would be devastating.

Young calf has the cutest mustache ever
Joe is a happy little calf who lives on a beautiful farm in Ontario, Canada. It's a magical place where the cows wander freely over vast expanses of lush, green meadow. They graze happily in the fresh air and lounge in the ponds on hot days. They can soak up the sunshine or find shade under the trees on the edge of the forest, as they choose.
Joe has everything he needs, including an endless supply of warm milk to fill his belly. He follows his mother around the pasture and nurses whenever he wishes.
After a satisfying breakfast, Joe had the foamy remains all over his little face. It was the most adorable milk moustache and beard ever. Joe has very few cares in the world. He plays with the other calves in the meadow and he explores his surroundings as his mother grazes and keeps an eye on him.
Joe lives on what is referred to as an ethical beef farm. The cows live outside, except in the harshest winter months. They have lots of room, the companionship of the herd, and all efforts are made to give them a stress free life. There is even a bull named Gus, who watches over them protectively and does his job in a natural way. It's life as close as possible to what nature intended for these gentle souls.
Joe is only a few weeks old and he is just starting to nibble at the grass, but he will rely on his mother for a few more months before he starts to graze like she does. Until then, his life is about as care-free as it can be.

Cow mother encourages her dogs to take their first steps
Agnes is a wonderful cow who lives on a beautiful farm in Ontario, Canada. She has just given birth to her first calf only moments earlier and she has licked and cleaned him. This is important for bonding and for establishing the calf's understanding that he is safe and cared for in this strange and new world that he has just entered. He's had a very tiring experience and he rests for several minutes as he adjusts to breathing the air.
But the little fellow must get to his feet quickly. Although he is safe on this farm, there could be predators that will take advantage of a newborn who cannot follow the heard for protection. He must walk quickly and run soon after. He will need to get to his mom's udder soon too for that crucial first drink of milk that is loaded with colostrum. These are the antibodies that form his immune system and it is vital that he begins to develop immunity to infection right away. His mother is ready to feed him and the milk is actually dripping from her.
Agnes patiently waits and grazes while her baby adjusts. She moos gently and she licks and nudges him encouragingly. Flossey, a seasoned mother comes over to inspect the calf and offer congratulations. She sniffs at the baby and stands protectively as Agnes recovers from the effort of giving birth. Cows often form relationships and close bonds with other cows in the herd. Agnes may not let the other cows wander too close during these first moments, but she adores Flossey and she tolerates her getting very close to the newborn.
Farms like this one exist all over North AMerica, but they are far from ordinary. This is an ethical beef farm and the farmers here have a very different approach to producing our food. They have a genuine desire to take proper care of the animals. It's a small, family run farm where the animals get names and the farmers know their likes and dislikes. The cows respond to kindness and allow their keepers to handle them and even their babies. Herd health is far more important than profit and each animal receives proper veterinary care. The cows have vast expanses of meadow for roaming and grazing. A massive, but gentle bull named Gus watches over his ladies protectively and carries out his duties in a very natural way. The cows have ponds full of fresh water and forested area for shade. The cows can nap in the sunshine or seek shelter under the trees. It's life as close to what nature intended for these gentle beasts.
Factory run farms treat their animals much differently. They transport their cows great distances in confined spaces, and the meat is also transported across the country or around the world, driving up cost which inevitably means other corners must be cut to maintain profit. A competitive market means less care and more cruelty in the production of our food. Many people choose a vegan lifestyle and that is commendable. But for those who will continue to eat meat, sourcing a family farm that is local and natural means that the cost of raising the food has been spent on proper care. The meat is often healthier too and the impact on the environment is reduced when we shop locally.
There are many good reasons to support those farmers who care enough to do things right for their animals and for us.

Sleeping mother owl with her chick listens to the baby in the nest
Great horned owls are one of the most spectacular of the owls. They are large and magnificent birds, and as predators, they are capable of taking down animals even larger than themselves. They have been known to take down even large raptors such as osprey, falcons, and other owls. With a grip strength of 28 pounds, their talons are capable of breaking the spine of even large prey.
Crows are often heard cawing in large numbers, agitated by the presence of a great horned owl, which is their most dangerous predator. Crows will gather to mob and chase these owls until they leave the area entirely.
Great horned owls also have the deepest voice of the owls and their calls are very distinctive.
This mother owl is watching her surroundings carefully, opening her eyes occasionally as she nods off with her baby in the nest. The owl chicks have downy feathers and they are very soft and fluffy. Soon, this one will grow flight feathers and it will leave the nest, learning to hunt from its parents. The mother seems to drift off then wake up, always on the lookout for danger. These owls have extremely large eyes and pupils that dilate a great deal, giving them incredible vision in the dark, as well as acuity in the daytime.
Great horned owls also have disc feathers near their ears that direct sound, increasing their ability to hear even the faintest of sounds. They are the quintessential owl, closely resembling the owls that we see in books and on television. This nature enthusiast was thrilled to capture video and photos of this beautiful pair ion the nest.

Gull shows her chick smooth liftoff without flapping her wings
These gulls inhabit the rock cliffs on the isolated shoreline of the Galapagos Islands. They live in a remote world where adaptation is crucial to survival. Rearing their young on the edge of a sheer drop to the raging surf below provides an aspect of danger but it also reduces the chance that they will be vulnerable to predators.
The gull's food comes from the ocean below the cliffs as the mother makes frequent trips out over the water to snatch small fish from just below the surface. She carries them back to feed her baby from sunrise to sunset, working hard to keep up with the ravenous chick. This will continue as it grows rapidly. It will soon take flight and leave the rocks to follow her out to sea.
The mother gives a beautiful demonstration of a graceful takeoff, stretching her wings wide and lifting smoothly off the rocks without even a single flap. Shel slowly gains height and then banks to the right and arcs beautifully out over the waves with no effort. The wind here is constant and the updraft provides the gull with an easy way to get back and forth with the smallest energy expenditure.
The Galapagos Islands are home to some of the most diverse and unique animals on the entire planet. Many have adapted to life in this hostile environment as the challenges they face result in evolutionary changes. The animals are isolated from other populations, creating very different physical characteristics than those of animals in other countries.
The more we understand the life around us, the better we will be able to protect it.

Majestic Sumatran tigers enjoy rest in thunderstorms
Sumatran tigers are an endangered species that were estimated to be less than 700 in number in 2008. Sadly, this population was declining and is almost certainly lower today. It is one of the smallest tigers, topping the scale at 140kg (310lbs). It has distinctive striping and differences in skull size when compared with other tigers.
This beautiful big cat was lazing on the edge of the forested area, soaking up some sunshine.
Fearless, these tigers have no predators, except other tigers and humans. Their decline has been caused by habitat loss and hunting. These tigers shy away from areas that are frequented by humans, or areas where this is encroachment due to construction. Yet fear, misunderstanding, and black market demand for skins and teeth continue to drive the illegal poaching that threatens them.
This tiger eventually retired to a shaded area under some fallen timbers. It has a small cave that it treats as its den. As the tiger watches its surroundings, there can be no doubt about the look in its eyes that it is ready to spring into action if an opportunity for food comes along.
Conservation agencies around the world have declared the Sumatran tiger decline a crisis. Conservation efforts and enforcement efforts are being funded to reduce poaching and reduce the killing of these tigers by farmers who feel the need to protect their livestock. Forest ranger patrols have put pressure on the poachers and the rangers continue to remove snare traps. It is difficult to know if the efforts will be enough to save the species. Losing these beautiful animals forever would be beyond tragic.
