The Mostly Forgotten Women of "The Mercury 13" Crew
The women of the Mercury 13 crew aced the same tests as male astronauts, but decades would pass before spaceflight would be for both men and women. The Mercury 13 Program consisted of thirteen American women who, as part of a privately funded program, successfully underwent the same physiological screening tests as had the astronauts selected by NASA on April 9, 1959, for Project Mercury. The term "Mercury 13 Program" was coined by James Cross as a comparison to the Mercury Seven name given to the selected male astronauts. The Mercury 13 program was not part of NASA's astronaut program, they never flew in space as part of a NASA mission, and never met as a whole group. Enjoy this small documentary from Rad History, THe Mostly Forgotten Women of "The Mercury 13" Crew.

Building The Hoover Dam | CRAZY FACTS
Building the Hoover Dam was no small feat. The Hoover Dam is the embodiment of American ingenuity and the American Spirit. The Hoover Dam, formerly called Boulder Dam, is a dam in Black Canyon on the Colorado River, at the Arizona-Nevada border, U.S. Constructed between 1930 and 1936, it is the highest concrete arch dam in the United States. By building the Hoover Dam, it impounds Lake Mead, which extends for 115 miles (185 km) upstream and is one of the largest artificial lakes in the world. The Hoover Dam is used for flood and silt control, hydroelectric power, agricultural irrigation, and domestic water supply. It is also a major sightseeing destination, with some seven million visitors a year, almost one million of whom go on tours through the dam.
"It is fitting that the flag of our country should fly here in honor of those men who, inspired by a vision of lonely lands made fruitful, conceived this great work and of those others whose genius and labor made that vision a reality."
"They died to make the desert bloom. The United States of America will continue to remember that many who toiled here found their final rest while engaged in the building of this dam. The United States of America will continue to remember the services of all who labored to clothe with substance the plans of those who first visioned the building of this dam."
