A strong cold front may arrive behind enough instability to fuel some strong to damaging wind gusts across southern Lower Michigan tomorrow. I expect the threat to remain isolated to this area of the Great Lakes Region. Beyond this, cooler air will slowly filter into the Great Lakes Region bringing the first widespread freeze to the region, effectively ending the growing season. A deepening low pressure system to the west will progress into the Great Lakes Region over the next couple of days, bringing the potential for showers and thunderstorms. Though severe weather is not expected, the potential for up to 2 inches of rain exists for multiple regions. Cooler temperatures will again follow this low pressure system as we look at some possible frost for some places in Michigan. A favorable environment for waterspouts is expected over Lake Michigan Friday afternoon and will continue into Lake Erie on Saturday. The progression of warm and cold air masses is going to continue through much of October across the Great Lakes Region with temperatures bouncing from abnormally warm to abnormally cold, accompanied by passing pressure systems that could favor some showers and thunderstorms. Severe weather potential appears low for Thursday but a brief severe thunderstorm can't be ruled out in the Great Lakes Region depending on the timing of the setup. A weakening upper-level low to the west will shift southeast towards our area on Monday. A few thunderstorms cannot be ruled out Tuesday and Wednesday- severe weather chance is low, but there may be an isolated potential developing in western Indiana Tuesday and Southern Ohio on Wednesday as a burst of mid-level winds could favor some stronger activity. Following the movement of this low will be a continuing warm, dry pattern, with current models favoring upper 70s through the first week of October. A strong cold front will move into the area tomorrow afternoon, but low wind shear will bring only the potential for damaging winds, strong lightning, and heavy rainfall. Lack of wind shear will inhibit tornado and hail potential should models continue their current trend. Behind this cold front, cooler weather will continue over the next couple of days as a dry cool air mass filters in.
