As someone who can't play many horror games, this was a good balance of feeling eerie with only a couple of jump scares. Also, as a Kickstarter pledger, it's nice to see some developers follow through with finishing their games! This is a neat game that took around 2 hours to complete. There are so many things in the environment to interact with and there are a few times where I definitely got spooked! The game is called Yogi Bear in Japan, Yogi Bear's: Cartoon Capers for the European Super NES version, and Yogi Bear Cartoon Capers for the European Sega Mega Drive version. Yogi Bear’s Cartoon Capers came out in 1994, towards the end of this craze, and in a year that saw the release of some of the best platformers of the 16-bit generation. This game would have had a hard time standing out even a few years earlier but had little chance in a year as full of significant releases as 1994 was. Yogi Bear is a platformer, which will come as no surprise, and in most ways, it is a very typical one. The game includes five areas that are each divided into four stages, and there are also two varieties of bonus stages. The areas all take place in Jellystone Park, beginning with a snowy mountain, through caves, a forest, a river, and a construction site. The latter relates to the simple plot involving Yogi needing to save the park by stopping the construction of a chemical plant, an environmental trope more a product of the ’90s than the source material. The game does also feature an overworld, and stages can be replayed though there is no save or password feature included. The character art and animation are a definite highlight. The levels themselves are mostly colorful, but the background layers are usually sparse. There is some voice work of Yogi that thankfully isn’t overused to the point where it becomes irritating. It features a small island overworld, a large non-linear dungeon, countless monsters to battle, classic art that takes you back through time, and a nostalgic soundtrack. In the game, you venture on a quest to find the hidden Vanguard Relic. FEATURES: Non-linear adventure structure with multiple ways to get to most places. Simple, intuitive controls. Tons of secrets and Easter eggs. Designed around single-player, but even more fun with two-player co-op. Nostalgic graphics and music inspired by many 16-bit classics. Several display options, including widescreen and classic aspect ratios. A reluctant recommendation here. The game is super cheap, but it's also literally only 20 minutes long. There's a co-op, but with the tiny amount of content here, it's kinda pointless. Still, it's got a pleasantly retro vibe, and the music isn't terrible. Basically, you can think of it as being classic Legend of Zelda, except with a tiny overworld, only one boss, and a lot easier. There are hardly any pickups, and while the life potion might come in handy, the bombs are essentially pointless, and... that's it. This feels more like someone's project for a first-year game design class than a full game. Like a proof of concept (not really enough here to even call it a demo), and I think that it should probably be free. Noctem is a psychological horror game with an element of some real-life experiences. What we are trying to achieve, is to give you an immersive experience outside of what you can see on your screen, and for that reason, we invest mostly in the atmosphere and the ambiance. Story: Noctem is set in a little town in Alaska, with beautiful nature and mostly foggy, a place where strange things happen daily. There are whispers about the Alaska Triangle which connects the states of Anchorage, Juneau, and Barrow creating a triangle in which many people have disappeared and most of them have never been found. There are many theories behind this phenomenon, but no one is willing to speak about it. People disappear and most of them remain lost. Some say they died, some say they left… Others are still searching for them, to this day. The question is, where are they? The game takes place in Dry Creek which is a little town inside that triangle. Amelia Hudson used to live there with her family, right before she moved to England to study writing. While she was 14 years old her little brother, Tommy was diagnosed with leukemia. After two years, he died. Her mother couldn’t bear the pain and 8 months later, she commits suicide. Four years after the tragedy, Amelia was ready to move to England to study writing. But at the time she was there, she found out that her father died under mysterious circumstances in their house. She attended the funeral and devastated as she was, returned to England to continue her studies. The time of graduation was close and Amelia needed to complete her thesis. She decided to return home in order to have quiet and be able to concentrate. By the time she arrives though, she knows that something is wrong. She could feel that she was not alone in the house. Someone or something was messing with her head, her thoughts, her reality. Something is happening that is beyond any human understanding. Can she escape reality? The Master levels up by increasing the total population of the world, granting an increase in hit points and SP, used in performing miracles. Each area has two side-scrolling action sequences, one before the building simulation and near the end. In the action sequences, the player controls a humanlike statue brought to life by the Master. The player must jump from platform to platform while defeating monsters to accrue a score. At the end of each action sequence, the player must defeat a boss. It was fully colored and modeled in 3D with a new feature involving special attacks, based on a variety of aliens with different abilities. Hitting four of the same type of alien would grant one special missile to the player, fired with an alternative fire button which can be changed in the game's settings. The game boasts an original soundtrack (Never officially released) and bank of sound effects, unlockable game modes, and Easter eggs, as well as several references to the original Space Invaders. There is also a 2-player mode, which adds a second, yellow tank (Player 1's being blue) to the action. The game also had something of a storyline. An opening cinematic shows a pilot of a new style of tank, driving it around a desert base, presumably on Earth. The pilot drives to the fence around a 'Tank Graveyard', containing 3D versions of the original Space Invaders tank, dilapidated and falling apart. He destroys them all by striking one and causing a chain reaction explosion, at which point the cinematic ends. After completing the game, another cinematic is shown. The pilot faces one quick-moving yellow alien, which he eventually manages to shoot down. The pilot is then shown being awarded a medal outside The White House and salutes the camera. Meanwhile, in space, a disgruntled alien inside a large mothership strikes his monitor when it reveals that all his alien fighters have been destroyed. He warps his ship to a huge grey spacecraft, lands it in the hangar, and projects the Earth into the center of the room. The large craft then warps back to Earth and unleashes a great number of the large motherships onto the planet. Some levels have a number of bunkers above the tank. These are resistant against alien projectiles but will turn slightly redder each time they are hit. Eventually, they will be destroyed if hit too many times. The player can use these to particular advantage by firing at them from beneath, which damages the bunker but also moves it upwards. It consists of two kids, the Ice Climbers, Popo, and Nana, as they climb to the top of an icy mountain filled with enemies such as Topis and Polar Bears to stop the evil condor at the top. The player wields a hammer to both kill enemies, and make openings on the platform above. The first player controls Popo, a boy wearing a blue Eskimo parka, while the second player controls Nana, a girl wearing a pink one. The only tool they carry is a wooden mallet to carve openings in the ice above and to club enemies. Each mountain level consists of eight layers of colorful ice and a bonus stage. Standard, dull ice blocks pose no threat other than an easily disposed-of barrier and platform. Square ice blocks with higher detail are indestructible, forcing the player to take another path. Hatched ice acts as a conveyor belt sliding the Eskimo either left or right. Finally, many mountains include unbreakable moving platforms resembling clouds. The bonus stage takes place at the peak. Within a 40-second time limit and with no enemies, the Ice Climbers often face trickier jumps and multiple moving platforms. The peak is also the only place to recover stolen vegetables, most notably eggplants. Collecting just one piece of corn from the fifth bonus stage is the only way to gain an extra life. At the top of the peak, the Condor flies overhead. Enemies encountered on the way up the mountains include the Topi, Nitpicker, and White Bear. Topis come in two varieties: the blue seal featured in the Japanese Famicom Ice Climber release, and the short yeti seen in Western versions and Vs. Ice Climber. Topis have the ability to fill in holes in the floor with ice. To do this, a Topi scouts out an opening in the floor runs back to its cave and reemerges pushing an icicle to fill in two blocks. This process repeats until no more openings on their layer of ice exist. The Nitpicker is a small, mountain-dwelling bird that swoops down from icy caves on the levels' edges. Unlike the Topi, which is confined to one floor of the mountain, Nitpickers can cross over multiple ice layers. Taking them into account along with moving platforms and sliding ice, timing jumps can be more difficult. The final enemy is the White Bear. This enemy, wearing sunglasses and a pink speedo, appears on screen only when Popo and Nana take too long to advance. Pounding the ice, the Polar Bear forces the screen to move up. If an Eskimo is forced off the screen, the player loses a life. Other obstacles include deadly falling icicles. These can form on the bottom of any type of platform. After a few successful mountains climbed, all enemies' speeds increase. After the bonus stage, the players' scores are tallied. Points are rewarded for every brick of ice destroyed, every Topi-pushed icicle smashed, every Nitpicker killed and every vegetable collected. Finally, a bonus score is rewarded if a player manages to climb to the top of the bonus stage and jump up and grab the Condor. The game keeps track of the high score, although there is no way to save it on the NES version. The game can be played in one- or two-player mode. The latter places Popo and Nana against each other in a race to the summit.
