With a maximum depth of about 7,434 meters (24,390 ft) and temperatures between -2-10 °C (25-50 °F), the Southern Ocean is known for its tough weather conditions – it is the coldest and windiest ocean on Earth. The latitudes from 50 to 70 degrees south are also known as the "Furious Fifties" and "Shrieking Sixties" due to strong winds and large waves caused by the winds that blow around the globe in those areas. Volcano 'Mt. Sinabung' Creates 5km High Clouds of Ash (02/March/2021)
The Mount Sinabung erupted again today at 07.40 WIB (UTC + 7). The height of the ash column was observed to be approximately 5,000 meters above the peak or about 7,460 meters above sea level. Based on observations from the Mount Sinabung Observation Post of the Geological Agency and PVMBG, the ash column looks gray with thick intensity condoh to the east and southeast. Communities and visitors or tourists are advised not to carry out activities in villages that have been relocated. Residents also have to stay away and not be in a 3 km radius from the top of Mount Sinabung. To reduce the risk of health impacts from volcanic ash, people are also advised to wear masks when leaving the house. Residents near rivers that head to Sinabung are also urged to be aware of the dangers of hot and cold lava floods, and to protect clean water from the volcanic ash of Sinabung.

The cameraman told us that it was perhaps the wrong decision to go out into such rough seas there as it was dangerous. It could have been a difficult operation to rescue the crew if the boat capsized as the wind was going strong, the water was freezing cold and additional support could not be send over quickly due to the remoteness of the area. Luckily the boat and its crew was able to return safely to the main ship.

Rogue waves (also known as freak waves, monster waves, episodic waves, killer waves, extreme waves, sneaker waves, and abnormal waves) are unusually large, unexpected and suddenly appearing surface waves that can be extremely dangerous. In oceanography, rogue waves are more precisely defined as waves whose height is more than twice the significant wave height. Therefore, rogue waves are not necessarily the biggest waves found on the water; they are, rather, unusually large waves for a given sea state (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogue_wave).

'TSUNAMI-LIKE WAVES' Overrun Small Harbor in Italy During Storm | Tyrrhenian Sea

The destructive waves damaged several buildings, flooded streets and swapped away containers. Only due to the harbor's meter high safety walls the powerful waves haven't been able to devastate the whole harbor, including dozens of ships, cars and nearby houses.
Unlike 'real' tsunami waves which are generated by the displacement of water (for example, by earthquakes, landslides or big glacier calving events), waves which are generated by storms and tides usually have a smaller wavelength (find out more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsunami).

The spectacular video was recorded in the Bay of Biscay which is at its lowest point more than 4730 meters (+15,000 feet) deep and famous for its though and dangerous weather conditions during the winter months, reportedly causing several incidents of merchant ships loosing direction in storms. The large vessel is being swept like a small boat form one side to another in very long, deep swell and partially huge monster waves hitting it from the side (also checkout part 1). After the storm the crew actually noticed multiple holes in the hull of the ship – it's a miracle that the ship didn't sink! The water flooded nearly the whole ship including the converter room as well as a paint locker room which caused a huge mess when the water mixed with the paint. The motor got dismantled because it was heavily damaged by the water and the paint.

Glacier Calving | 15 Amazing Collapses, Tsunami Waves and Icebergs
Compilation of our most spectacular glacier calving and iceberg collapse videos! Huge chunks of ice (sometimes measuring more than 100 meters / 300 ft. in height over the water surface and hundreds of meters below) breaking off the glaciers and falling into the oceans can create tsunami-like waves, cause big icebergs to flip over or "shoot up". Glaciers and icebergs are melting in Greenland, Alaska, Argentina, Antarctica and all around the world – creating incredible spectacles for those lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time. More than 15 of these breathtaking glacier calving events are included in this montage. Of course all clips included are left with their original audio tracks; without music being added, you can listen to the cracking and melting of these ice giants.
Glacier calving, also known as ice calving, or iceberg calving, is the breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier. It is the sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier, iceberg, ice front, ice shelf, or crevasse. The ice that breaks away can be classified as an iceberg, but may also be a growler, bergy bit, or a crevasse wall breakaway. The entry of the ice into the water causes large, and often hazardous waves. The waves formed in locations like Johns Hopkins Glacier can be so large that boats cannot approach closer than 3 kilometres. These events have become major tourist attractions. Many glaciers terminate at oceans or freshwater lakes which results naturally with the calving of large numbers of icebergs. Calving of Greenland's glaciers produce 12,000 to 15,000 icebergs each year alone (Find out more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_calving).
Greenland is home to the only permanent ice sheet outside Antarctica. The sheet covers 3/4 of Greenland's land mass. But in the last 25 years, the Greenland Ice Sheet is rapidly melting, having lost 3.8 trillion tons of ice between 1992 and 2018, a new study from NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) finds. The melting ice has added 11 mm / 0.4 inches to sea level rise. Its cumulative 3.8 trillion tons of melted ice is equivalent to adding the water from 120 million Olympic-size swimming pools to the ocean every year (Find out more here: https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?feature=7556).
The ice field of the Glacier Perito Moreno is the world's third largest reserve of fresh water. In the right time of the year big blocks of ice break off the glacier and drop into the water. The waves created by such glacier calving events often splash dozens of meters through the air. The glacier is one of Argentina's most beautiful natural wonders, the colors and shapes of the ice remind of a piece of art of Gaudi. The glacier itself is about 5 km (3.1 mi) wide and has an average height of 74 m (240 ft) above the surface of the water.

MEGA-TSUNAMI caused by LANDSLIDE devastates village - Camera 1 | Greenland, Nuugaatsiaq
Shocking video captures the impact when one of the tallest tsunamis recorded in history hits and devastates the village of Nuugaatsiaq (Greenland) in the late evening hours, causing four deaths. Subscribe for extreme nature videos ► https://www.youtube.com/c/LicetStudios?sub_confirmation=1
In the evening of June 17th, 2017 (at about 9:40 pm local time), a gigantic landslide (measuring 300 m × 1,100 m = 980 ft × 3,610 ft) occurred on the southern slope of the Umiammakku Nunaat peninsula. Several dozen million cubic meters of rock and slope sediments fell about 1 km (3,300 ft) into the Kangilleq fjord, which triggered a tsunami that moved westward into the Karrat fjord complex. The tsunami wave, which was initially over 90 meters high (about 300 ft.), reached the small village Nuugaatsiaq with a wave height of about ten meters (about 30 ft.). It took the catastrophic tidal wave only seven minutes to cover the 32 kilometers distance to Nuugaatsiaq, which means it reached an average speed of 275 km/h. The tsunami dragged four people out to sea, who have since been considered dead. Furthermore, seven people were slightly injured and two people were seriously injured by the catastrophic natural disaster. Eleven buildings were destroyed. Rescue helicopters brought the approximately 200 local residents to the district capital of Uummannaq.
In 2018, a Swiss company observed the situation and found that the mountain slipped about 1 cm every day and one could expect another landslide at any time. The risk for this was rated at 11.5 out of 12, which is why a resettlement at this time was further excluded. Shortly thereafter it was announced that there was still danger from the mountain slope, making it impossible to end the evacuation. The village of Nuugaatsiaq has since been abandoned.
Was the Greenland tsunami a "mega-tsunami"? The Greenland tsunami may be considered as mega-tsunami (or impact tsunami) due to its incredible initial wave height of nearly 100 m / + 300 ft. By contrast to ordinary tsunamis, which usually reach an hight of about 30-100 ft., a megatsunami is a tsunami with an initial wave amplitude measured in several tens, hundreds, or possibly thousands of metres. Megatsunamis are caused by giant landslides and other impact events (including meteorite impacts in an ocean), while ordinary tsunamis are usually caused by underwater earthquakes or volcanic eruptions (which do not normally generate such large waves). Other recent megatsunamis include the wave associated with the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa (volcanic eruption), the 1958 Lituya Bay megatsunami (landslide into a bay), and the wave resulting from the Vajont Dam landslide (caused by human activity) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megatsunami).
When comparing this "Greenland Tsunami" with the 1958 "Lituya Bay Mega-tsunami", it seems surprising that the landslide which triggered the Greenland Tsunami was actually even bigger than the landslide which triggered the 1958 Lituya Bay mega-tsunami (45 million m³ which fell about 1 km into the Kangilleq fjord // vs. // 30 million m³ which fell from an elevation of about 900 m into the Lituya Bay). Somehow the Lituya Bay wave ended up being way higher in its max. (+524 m Vs. 100 m). The Greenland Tsunami wave was way faster – it only took 7 minutes to cover the 32 km distance to Nuugaatsiaq (which equals and average speed of about 275 km/h) compared with the speed of the Lituya Bay wave (estimated to only 160-210 hm/h).
Additional information and insights about this Greenland Mega-Tsunami can be found here: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/321539366_Karrat_Fjord_Greenland_tsunamigenic_landslide_of_17_June_2017_initial_3D_observations

Giant +75 Meter Iceberg BREAKING OFF Glacier | Glacier Wall Collapse
Spectacular capture of a large iceberg breaking off the glacier 'Perito Moreno' in Argentina. Subscribe for more ► https://www.youtube.com/c/LicetStudios?sub_confirmation=1
The ice field of the Glacier Perito Moreno is the world's third largest reserve of fresh water.
Despite that most of the innumerable glaciers worldwide are retreating as a result of global warming and climate change, one of the few unusual glaciers that maintains a state of equilibrium is the Perito Moreno glacier, because it continues to accumulate mass at a rate similar to that of its loss (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perito_Moreno_Glacier).

HAMMOCK BEARS: Momma Bear and Two Cubs Play On a Hammock
A Momma Bear and her two cubs play on a hammock. Momma bear strikes some hilarious anthropomorphic poses, while her two cubs are adorably clumsy. Love how they take turns flipping each other off the hammock. I have compiled lots of bear footage over the years, and have never seen a Momma Bear so playful with her cubs before. It’s a joy to witness.

Thunderstorm, lightning strikes, gusts - a ship in storm: The DFDS ferry REGINA SEAWAYS on the way from Klaipeda (Lithuania) to Kiel (Germany) encountered a huge thunderstorm on the open sea off the German coast. Subscribe ► https://www.youtube.com/c/LicetStudios?sub_confirmation=1
Thunderstorms, also known as an electrical storm or a lightning storm, occur in a type of cloud known as a cumulonimbus, are usually accompanied by strong winds, and often produce heavy rain and sometimes snow, sleet, or hail, but some thunderstorms produce little precipitation or no precipitation at all. Stronger thunderstorm cells are even capable of producing tornadoes and waterspouts. (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderstorm)
