This is the second part of an interview I originally posted in August of last year. One of the highlights of my time learning and sharing Appalachian history is this interview with Dewey Hardy. I've known Dewey essentially my whole life as we attended to the same church and I went to high school with his son Max. It is amazing what you can learn about someone, even a person you think you know a lot about, if you spend an hour talking to them about their life. Dewey was born and raised in McDowell County, West Virginia, and discusses his early life, his start in coal mining in the 1950s, and his experiences with mine disasters and union strikes in this video. I broke the video up in segments due to the length of the interview. This first segment should give you a good start in learning a little about life growing up in a coal mining town in Southern West Virginia. I will post the rest in the future. Amonate, Virginia: "We Were So Poor We Spelled It With 3 'Os'" Amonate was a top-producing coal mine for the famous Pocahontas Fuel Company in the glory days of coal mining in Appalachia. Originally built as a model town, several homes are still in great shape because they were constructed of a higher quality than many other coal camps. Like most all coal camps, Amonate has seen better days and fallen on hard times but there's still a lot of pride in being from this great community that straddles the state lines of Virginia and West Virginia. Bonny Blue, Virginia: Hard Times Hit the Coalfields of Appalachia Bonny Blue was a top-producing coal operation in its heyday but has fallen on hard times recently with a rapidly declining population. Coal has made a bit of a comeback but the impact isn’t really felt in this old coal town in Lee County, Virginia. Appalachian people in the coalfields are used to hard times and surviving them, it is part of the experience. St. Charles, Virginia: The Town That Dopesickness Killed St. Charles has been hit hard through the years as the decline in the coal industry took a toll. Health issues led to predatory marketing from the pharmaceutical industry that was documented in the book Dopesick. Sensabaugh Tunnel(s) in Kingsport, Tennessee: The Twin Tunnels of Terror. Much confusion exists about the infamous Sensabaugh Tunnel. There are actually two tunnels associated with the name Sensabaugh Tunnel but one is actually the Click Tunnel.
