President Biden campaigns in Las Vegas' Historic Westside
U.S. President Joe Biden brought his bid for re-election to Nevada voters on Sunday as part of a two-day visit to the 2024 battleground state leading up to Tuesday's Democratic primary. During his visit, the president participated in two campaign events in Nevada, a state with just over 3 million residents, predominantly concentrated in the bustling gambling and entertainment hub of Las Vegas.
Biden's itinerary included a visit to the historic Westside, located northwest of the Las Vegas Strip, where Black Americans, grappling with segregation a century ago, established their own casinos and clubs. On Nevada's Democratic presidential primary ballot, Biden shares space with self-help author Marianne Williamson and a few lesser-known challengers. U.S. Representative Dean Phillips of Minnesota did not meet the filing deadline and will not appear on the ballot.
In the 2020 election, Biden narrowly defeated his Republican rival Donald Trump in Nevada by a margin of 33,596 votes, or less than 3%. Opinion polls suggest that a potential rematch between the two in the upcoming election would be closely contested. Approximately 30% of Nevada's population identifies as Latino or Hispanic according to the U.S. Census, and Republicans are making efforts to gain support among these voters nationwide.
Although Republicans are also holding a primary in Nevada on February 6, former President Trump has chosen to participate in a February 8 caucus in the state, and thus, will not be on the ballot. The state's latest figures indicate around 705,000 registered Democrats, 646,000 registered Republicans, and nearly 768,000 nonpartisan voters.
In the upcoming Republican and Democratic primaries, voters will also have the option to choose "None of these candidates." Looking ahead to November, Nevada will have six Electoral College votes at stake in the presidential election, contributing to the 270 votes needed for victory.
With the election drawing nearer, President Biden and his team are traversing the United States to discuss the resilient economy, the impact of the president's clean energy tax incentives, labor union support, and infrastructure investments. Biden emphasized the importance of victory, stating, "We have to win. I give you my word, we have to. There's not much of a choice here."
In December, Biden visited Las Vegas to highlight a new high-speed rail project connecting the city to Los Angeles. Additionally, last March, the Biden administration designated a new national park, Avi Kwa Ame, named after Spirit Mountain in the Mojave language, located in southern Nevada. This site holds cultural significance for Native American tribes like the Paiute and Chemehuevi and serves as a habitat for the desert bighorn sheep, desert tortoise, and Joshua tree forest.
In recent weeks, President Biden has intensified his direct criticism of Trump, portraying him as a threat to democracy and raising questions about his mental acuity. The president has faced persistently low approval ratings. Biden's campaign strategy involves transferring senior White House staff to the campaign, indicating the belief that Trump will ultimately secure the Republican nomination, despite competition from former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley.
Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for the Trump campaign, countered by stating, "Americans are sick and tired of the last four years of destructive policies that have brought nothing but pain and misery across the country."

Culinary union members picket downtown casinos ahead of strike deadline
Culinary union members persisted in their picketing efforts outside downtown Las Vegas casino properties that still had unresolved contracts.
The culinary union had established a strike deadline for Monday, encompassing all properties with unsettled agreements.
Currently, six Las Vegas resorts remain in this situation. Virgin Hotels is the last property on the Las Vegas Strip with an unsettled contract, as the union recently revealed a tentative agreement with Rio Hotel and Casino, Binions, and Four Queens on Friday. The four downtown Las Vegas properties in question include the Golden Nugget, Downtown Grand, Fremont, and Main Street.
Bella Angeles, who has been employed at the Golden Nugget for 15 years, passionately joined her fellow 3,600 workers in chanting and displaying signs while they awaited new five-year contracts.
"Fingers crossed that we get all that we need and deserve," Angeles expressed.
Their demands encompassed better pay, improved benefits, and increased job security in the face of technological advancements.
"Support the union, support us in our fight for our jobs and our families. This isn't just about me; it's about all our families," she passionately declared outside her workplace.
Despite not being situated on the Las Vegas Strip, Tedd Pappageorge from the Culinary Union clarified that Virgin Hotel is considered a Strip property. Rio Hotel is also categorized as such.
"They all market themselves as Strip properties and have historically adhered to Strip rates and contracts, and we are not inclined to change that now," Pappageorge emphasized.
Pappageorge further explained that the contracts are uniform for all Strip properties, with the new agreement increasing wages to $37, up from an average of $28, inclusive of benefits.
The downtown properties have a slightly lower wage offer.
Bill Werner, a labor relations professor at UNLV, offered insight during an interview with 8 News Now on Friday. He mentioned that the union views Las Vegas as two distinct markets: the Strip and Downtown. He also noted that the eight-month duration it has taken to reach a deal is a typical timeframe in these negotiations.

Police Chase ends with Crash and Suspect Arrested at Palace Station Casino
Title: Police Chase Culminates in Palace Station Casino Parking Lot: A Dramatic Conclusion Raises Questions
Las Vegas, known for its bright lights and bustling streets, witnessed an extraordinary police chase that reached its dramatic conclusion in the parking lot of the iconic Palace Station Casino. While the arrest of the suspect marked the end of the high-speed pursuit, it also triggered a controversy over the actions of the casino's security guards who seemed to prioritize removing news photographers over the fleeing felons.
The High-Speed Pursuit:
The incident began as a routine traffic stop in a Las Vegas neighborhood, but it quickly escalated into a high-speed chase when the driver, later identified as John Doe, refused to comply with law enforcement officers. What followed was a heart-pounding pursuit through the city streets, with police cars in hot pursuit of the suspect.
The Crashed Van and Chaos:
During the chase, chaos ensued as the suspect maneuvered through traffic at breakneck speeds. At a busy intersection, a van collided with another vehicle, resulting in a spectacular crash that sent shockwaves through the witnesses. Bystanders were left stunned as the chase continued unabated.
The Climactic Scene at Palace Station Casino:
The unexpected twist in this adrenaline-pumping chase came when it reached its climax in the parking lot of the Palace Station Casino. Patrons and employees inside the casino could hardly believe their eyes as police cars surrounded the entrance of the establishment, temporarily disrupting the usual casino ambiance.
The Arrest of the Suspect:
Amid the tense atmosphere, law enforcement officers managed to apprehend John Doe. He was arrested without further incident and taken into custody, where he now faces multiple charges related to the reckless pursuit and the earlier hit-and-run incident that had occurred during the chase.
Controversy Surrounding Palace Station Casino Security Guards:
While the arrest of the suspect was a relief for authorities and bystanders, a separate controversy was brewing just steps away from the arrest scene. Palace Station Casino security guards took it upon themselves to remove news photographers from the area, a move that has since drawn criticism.
Media professionals and advocates argue that the security guards seemed to prioritize protecting the casino's image over the public's right to information. Journalists play a vital role in keeping the public informed about significant events, especially those with potential public safety implications.
The Debate on Security and Transparency:
The incident has sparked a broader debate about the role of private security personnel in public emergencies. While it is crucial for businesses like casinos to ensure the safety and privacy of their patrons, it is equally important to uphold the principles of freedom of the press and public access to information.
Local law enforcement agencies are now reviewing the actions taken by Palace Station Casino security guards and the impact they had on the overall handling of the incident. This incident serves as a reminder that finding a balance between security and transparency in public spaces remains a complex challenge, particularly when high-stress situations unfold.
In Conclusion:
The police chase that concluded in the Palace Station Casino parking lot left Las Vegas residents and visitors on the edge of their seats. While the suspect is in custody, the controversy surrounding the actions of the casino's security guards raises important questions about the delicate balance between security and transparency in public emergencies. As the investigation continues, it is hoped that lessons will be learned and applied to future incidents, ensuring that both safety and the public's right to information are respected.

It was a sight to behold as three tow trucks were dispatched to the scene. These heavy-duty vehicles, equipped with powerful winches and expert operators, worked in unison to upright the concrete truck. After court order, CCSD releases police body camera video of incident near Durango High
After nearly a year of resistance, the Clark County School District (CCSD) has finally released body camera footage of an incident where a school police officer is seen forcefully slamming a student to the ground. The incident, which occurred last February near Durango High School, involved other students ending up in handcuffs, as captured in cell phone videos.
FOX5 took legal action, filing public records requests and involving lawyers to compel CCSD to release the video and written reports. The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada also took the matter to court, resulting in a judge's order to release the video 30 days ago.
The students involved claimed they were approached by officers without clear explanations. One student stated he was merely recording the interaction on his cell phone, while another mentioned being accused of jaywalking. The police had initially mentioned investigating reports of a gun near the campus but never clarified why the officer used force, and no gun was found on the students.
Despite efforts by CCSD to block the video's release, citing confidentiality concerns, a judge ordered its public disclosure. CCSD Superintendent Jesus Jara, in response to the incident, called for a review of the CCSD Police Department's use of force policies, emphasizing the need for respect and safety for students.
Notably, the officer involved in the incident was not disciplined by CCSD. Attorney Adam Levine, representing the Police Officers Association of the Clark County School District, defended the officer's actions, stating that the body camera footage showed the officer defusing a potentially dangerous situation and acting courteously afterward.
FOX5 reached out to CCSD and CCSD Police for comment on the released body camera video. Additionally, an update includes footage of a CCSD police officer engaging in a hostile interaction upon arriving at the scene, further intensifying concerns about the handling of the situation.
In a social media post, the Executive Director of ACLU Nevada accused CCSD PD of lying, expressing vindication after a year of legal battles to obtain the body camera footage. The footage is set to be made public soon, revealing the full details surrounding the assault of the students by school police.

Accused judge attacker faces battery, attempted murder charges in different Las Vegas courtroom
Deobra Redden, the individual featured in a widely circulated video, has faced a different judge in a separate courtroom, now confronting additional charges related to the incident where he leaped over a bench to attack a Las Vegas judge.
On Monday, prosecutors revised the charges against Redden, now including attempted murder on an older person. During his initial appearance on Tuesday morning, he faced over a dozen charges, five more than those initially filed last Thursday, when he refused to attend.
Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson stated last week that additional charges were planned. He mentioned, "In the next few days, my office will be reviewing all of the reports to determine what charges to bring based on Mr. Redden’s behavior in court." The comprehensive list of felony counts now includes attempted murder against an older person, battery on a protected person resulting in substantial bodily harm against an older person, extortion, intimidating a public officer with the threat of force, disregarding the safety of a person resulting in substantial bodily harm, battery by a probationer or parolee, unlawful act regarding fluid by a prisoner in confinement, and six counts of battery on a protected person.
During a sentencing hearing on Monday, Redden appeared surrounded by seven law enforcement officers, shackled, and wearing a spit guard and rubber gloves. Similar arrangements were observed on Tuesday, with his next appearance scheduled for February 14th at 9 am.

Fire engulfs office building in downtown Los Angeles
On Friday, fire crews grappled with a massive blaze that consumed an office building in downtown Los Angeles. This incident marks the third time this year that the deserted structure has been engulfed in flames.
Over 40 Los Angeles firefighters rushed to the scene to combat the swiftly spreading fire, which ultimately led to the collapse of the two-story office building's roof.
While the cause is still under investigation, some residents speculate that squatters residing in the building may have sparked the fire. The structure, situated along Sunset Boulevard, had already been boarded up prior to succumbing to the inferno, as confirmed by the LAFD. The building had a history of previous fires, including one in early December, prompting arson investigators to arrive and determine the cause.
Adjacent to the site, a homeless encampment raised suspicions among locals, who suggested that trespassers or squatters might be responsible for the destruction. However, LAFD Battalion Chief Mike Castillo stated, "At this time, there's no indication that it was the result of homeless activity."
The fire was successfully extinguished after several hours, with no reported injuries during the incident. Fire crews are set to remain at the site throughout Friday night in collaboration with the city's Building and Safety Department.
