The First Omen Review
I’ve always really enjoyed The Omen as a franchise. Even as a kid, I found something about the original trilogy centring around Damien Thorn especially gripping. However, I never had much use for the cheap TV movie sequel (Omen IV: The Awakening) or the scene-for-scene remake, which, despite a game cast, didn’t come close to recapturing the grisly spirit of Richard Donner’s original.
As such, I figured The First Omen would be just another would-be franchise starter, but I have to give 20th Century Studios and Disney credit - they made one hell of a cool horror flick (pun intended). In some ways, it’s a bit like Wonka (bear with me) in that it’s a prequel that does its own thing without shitting all over the original, with the Donner film and the original movies that follow all existing in the same universe this does.

What Happened To Manhunter?
How cool would it be to wake up in an alternate universe where bizarre versions of your favorite movies existed and you could experience them all over again for the first time? That’s exactly what I can offer to The Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon fans who have never experienced Manhunter. The forgotten and abandoned stepchild of the Hannibal Lecter film series. How in the hell does a movie that has the twisted murder weirdness and fascinating serial killer storytelling of a Silence of the Lambs or Mindhunter paired with the coolness of a movie like Heat and flair of a Nicolas Winding Refn film go this unnoticed? Let’s find out together. Get in, loser. We’re going serial killer hunting with just What Happened To Manhunter?

The movie serves as a bridge between the end of season five and the beginning of season six. The X-Files have officially been shut down, and Mulder and Scully have to act according to protocol. Yawn. Alien: Deconstructing A Masterpiece
Folks, slasher movies are kind of a big deal here on JoBlo Horror Originals. We love seeing Ghost Face reveal their identities at the end of Scream, we revisit the horror of Haddonfield every Halloween and we sure as sh*t make sure to cover our fair share of cult slashers that fly below the mainstream radar. But lately, I’ve been trying to scratch a different itch. I mean, I’m always in the mood for blood and guts, but I’ve been in the mood for something a little more “out there” from a hulking masked killer. Of course, within horror, there are many avenues that I could go down. See, on this show, I’ve covered ghosts, demons, cults, witches, haunted artifacts, monsters, serial killers, and even robots- but I don’t feel that I’ve properly explored- is aliens.

What Happened to Hostel: Part 2?
So, like any other horror movie that manages to whip up a frenzy with critics and fans alike, plus a decent box office return, a sequel was inevitable. Although the fevered response to the movie may have been mixed, audiences had a taste for Slovakian-based bloodshed, and Eli Roth was just the man to deliver it. Again. However, with a promise that the grisly ante was going to be upped significantly in the sequel, could Roth prove that the decent premise of the first movie could be expanded upon in the sequel? Let’s find out here on What Happened to Hostel: Part 2.

Dead Alive: Peter Jackson & The Art Of Excess
These days, Peter Jackson is best known for directing big budget spectacles. He took the Hobbits to Mordor. He cast Benedict Cumberbatch as a dragon. He brought us the sight of a motion-capture King Kong smacking around a bunch of dinosaurs. But when he was just getting his career started, he was making very different kinds of movies. Horror comedies that were drenched in blood. And pretty much every other bodily fluid you can think of. In 1992, he brought the world what may be the bloodiest film ever made. A zombie comedy he would call BRAINDEAD, but many fans know it as DEAD ALIVE. And if you haven’t seen this one yet, it’s THE BEST HORROR MOVIE YOU NEVER SAW.

Is Demon Wind The Ultimate Evil Dead II Knockoff?
There is something to appreciate when horror deviates from the typical slice and dice. Sometimes it involves demonic possessions (Exorcist), blood-thirsty sharks (Jaws), killer dolls (Child’s Play) or even a shape-shifting organism (The Thing). The horror genre has constantly evolved over-time but today we’re going to go totally left field and have a matchup for the ages between the originator and the emulator. One that involves the book of the dead and deadites while the other brings blood-hungry demons, mystical daggers, and roundhouse loving magicians. Yes, it’s all there with plenty to chew on, and there are no qualms about it, well sort of. We have in our Horror Movie Rip-off ring, 1990’s Demon Wind directed by Charles Philip Moore and 1987’s Evil Dead 2 directed by Sam Raimi. Did Demon Wind rip a page right out of Evil Dead’s Necronomicon for their own, and tried to do it better? Let’s get our boom stick, our Kandarian Dagger, and dive right in.

From Hell: WTF Happened To This Adaptation?
As Marvel and DC forge ahead in cinema, we return to graphic novels for another book vs. movie comparison. Today, we examine a largely forgotten early 2000s film adapted from Alan Moore's acclaimed graphic novel. Set against the backdrop of Whitechapel's real-life killings, the film's fidelity to the source material is scrutinized. It is based on the very real killings in Whitechapel that were later attributed to Jack The Ripper. While both have a lot of truths to them, along with quite a bit of fantasy and conjecture, how close to the source material does the 2001 film get. Line up your suspects as we find out what happened to this adaptation.

Deconstructing Starship Troopers
Look, I don’t want to waste anyone’s time- We all know that Starship Troopers isn’t a horror movie. It’s a science fiction intergalactic comedy with a light tone and Neil Patrick Harris- but it’s also a well-made and tightly performed 90’s creature feature that is sure to tickle the nostalgia bone for many JoBlo Horror fans. So, my goal today isn’t to convince you that Starship Troopers is a horror movie- but what’s more is that I want to convince you that it’s worth watching anyway. And the best way I know how to do that is to put this movie over the microscope and figure out just what it is that makes it so special after all these years. I’m Kier with JoBlo Horror Originals, and you’re watching Deconstructing.

WTF Happened To Shaun Of The Dead?
Thanks to a love of George A. Romero’s classics such as Night of the Living Dead, plus an episode of Spaced, director and huge horror fan Edgar Wright helped to spawn a whole new subgenre of horror: the Romantic Zombie Comedy, or Rom-Zom-Com, with 2004’s Shaun of the Dead. It brought us a tale of slackers, family, zombies, a love triangle, and vinyl records being used as lethal weapons. But does it blend all of these elements into a gory, funny, and satisfying new subgenre? Let’s find out here on WTF Happened to Shaun of the Dead!

Does The Last House On The Left Remake Surpass The Original?
Remakes are always a tricky proposition. Take, for instance, 1982’s The Thing, objectively better than its predecessor, but it lingered in uncertainty before finding its deserved appreciation. Some remakes, like John Carpenter's The Thing, Don Seigel’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and David Cronenberg’s The Fly, excel in their own right. Quality-wise, these films stand undisputed. The debate over what can or can't be remade is open with few sacred cows left. While some updates, like The Fog, suffer from inferior CGI and casting, others, such as The Last House on the Left (2009), benefit from enhanced budgets and professionalism, offering fresh perspectives on harrowing tales. Today, we'll explore why the 2009 remake deserves recognition beyond its usual categorization.

WTF Happened To Hannibal?
The release of The Silence of the Lambs in 1991 marked a significant cinematic success and won all five major awards at the Oscars. Reflecting on the 90s era versus today's Hollywood landscape, the notion of a sequel being accompanied by an entire cinematic universe under Disney's ownership feels both plausible and unsettling. The anticipation for a sequel was met with the expectation of a follow-up novel, which eventually arrived in 1998, a seven-year gap contrasting sharply with contemporary sequel standards.
