INCREDIBLE Winter Fly Fishing for BIG Brown Trout! (Streamer Fishing)
The BEST Winter Trout Fishing I've ever had!!
You ever have one of those days that just doesn’t feel real? Where everything is lining up, and even in the moment, you realize you won’t be able to recreate what is happening in front of you for a very long time. Well on January 16th, 2023 my buddy Dustin and I had one of those days. Where, for seemingly no reason at all, the fish threw caution to the wind and gave us an incredible show. This is the best day of winter streamer fishing I’ve ever had.
The conditions for the day weren’t ideal. It was 28 degrees when we stepped into the water with the sun just cresting over the mountains. We would have been happy with ANY browns, so when I immediately caught a good fish, our day was already made. Everything else was icing on the cake. Dustin followed up shortly after that with an incredible brown trout and we were off to the races!
The entire sequence of 3 big browns came within maybe 10 minutes of each other all out of the same hole. That was some of the quickest back to back fish of that quality that I’ve ever seen. But What you won’t see is the previous days of fishing with little to nothing to show for it, and the hours on the water both dustin and I have spent over the years to have a winter day like we had this January. Hope you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching.

This video doesn't do this lake justice... and yes it has fish in it!! Go check out the full video. We had to hike quite a few miles to get to this lake but it was worth it. The water was the most blue of any I've seen. Fly fishing at the lake was fun but the fish weren't too big. Thanks for watching the video! #flyfishing #lake #outdoors #nature

Fly Fishing with the MOST EFFECTIVE STREAMER PATTERN!? || TIE AND CATCH EP. 1
YOUTUBE'S FIRST TIE AND CATCH!
We are starting a new series called the TIE AND CATCH where we tie a fly and the go catch fish on... it's that simple. This will enable everyone to see how the fly is tied, how the fly is fished, and how to catch fish on the fly. It's pretty much the total fly fishing package in one youtubve video.
In this video Andrew and our buddy William take on a well known river in Colorado in an attempt to show off how deadly a jig streamer can be when worked close to cover. They end up catching a giant rainbow trout and a giant brown trout in the same day. This is an area where the norm is to throw size 24 midges... but browns aren't afraid to eat a big meal too. Fly fishing doesn't have to be difficult.
I hope you enjoy this video!! #fishing #flyfishing #troutfishing

Fly Fishing a TINY Creek and catching a HUGE TROUT!
Fly Fishing for Big Brook trout and Rainbow Trout!
When I decide to fly fish a tiny creek I usually don't expect to catch anything massive. Typically a 12 inch fish in a small creek is pretty big. So when you run into a rainbow trout that is pushing 23 inches in a creek you can literally jump across its something you won't soon forget!!
I spent around 15 minutes trying to catch the big fish before it eventually at a size 12 stonefly. I had seen the fish earlier in the day but wasn't able to cast at it before it disappeared. So I spent some time fishing a different section of the creek and came back to the hole where I knew the big fish was laying. After hooking the fish all hell broke loose!
This fight is easily one of the most intense fights I've been in. Not necessarily because of the fish (I've caught bigger) but because of the small creek and the amount of stuff the fish could get into. It took me a while to tire the fish enough to even attempt to net it. And during that process I ended up falling face first into the creek. The water and air temperature was cold enough that it literally took my breath away. The fear of hyperthermia entered my mind as I desperately tied to get the fish in the net.
After finally netting the fish I realized that at some point (probably during the fall) I had hurt my back. Which at that point didn't matter much because I had the fish in the net. I was able to safely release the fish and get home without any real issues caused by taking the polar plunge.

Fly Fishing for Native Brook Trout in a Small Creek! (WINTER TROUT FISHING)
Fly Fishing for Native Brook trout in the Middle of Winter!
Brook Trout are the official state fish for 9 US states, the most of any fish species. A relic from the last ice age, their numbers have been on the decline for decades. The beauty of brook trout isn’t just the fish, but in the places they live. I’ve never been to an ugly native brook trout stream. If chasing native brook trout isn’t on your bucket list… then, well, it should be.
In this video I broke out the fly rod and decided to go fishing in the snow. I nymphed for the entirety of the day, catching most of my fish on a small green fly that imitated caddis larvae. I knew this small creek held a good amount of native brook trout and I was hoping a few would be willing to eat. The crystal clear water (that was a little low) made it difficult to get close enough to cast, and the white snow made me an obvious target when approaching the fish.
All in all I can't complain. I caught a handful of brook trout not the fly in the middle of winter in some clear and low water. This time of year is by far the toughest time to fish for these trout. I eventually got too cold to continue and backed out to fish another day.
Thanks for watching! #fishing #flyfishing #troutfishing

This Curly Tailed Streamer is INSANE! (Winter Fly Fishing)
WINTER STREAMER FISHING!
Winter streamer fishing can be tough. The cold water usually puts the fish down deep and their willingness to move any distance for food diminishes. That’s why sometimes something a little out of the box can work wonders. Throwing a fly that fish fish have never seen may entice them to commit when other flies just won’t. When the fishing gets tough, the tough get fishing.
In this video I went out during a cold winter day in search of some brown trout on the fly. I was trying a rather unique curly tailed streamer to see if it would work for my own curiosity. As I started using the fly I started realizing how ridiculously effective the streamer was. I'm sure some fly fishing purists may call it cheating, but quite honestly I had a blast throwing it. Winter fishing can be tough so any advantage I can get over the other fisherman I'm going to take.

Fly Fishing vs Spin Fishing: Which is better?? (Trout Fishing)
FLY ROD vs SPINNING ROD: Which do you think is better??
Fly fishing is a technique that has become near and dear to my heart over the last 5 years or so. However, I've been spin fishing for far more years than I've been fly fishing. So I feel as if my relatively recent experience with both puts me in a good position to be able to use both and figure out which is more effective!
SPIN FISHING: Spin fishing excels at being easier to pick up and become proficient at. The casting makes it such that you can move large sections of water and hit small areas of creeks that may be difficult to cast with a fly rod. The draw back is the lack of versatility. You can only really imitate bait fish or large bugs with ease, but that's not really what trout eat most of the time.
FLY FISHING: Fly Fishing is more difficult to become proficient at, but once you get to comfortable level with the fly rod it can be way more effective. The reason being is that trout just eat bugs and fly fishing easily imitates their main foot source. Fly fishing also has the versatility to imitate baitfish, nymphs, or any sort of bug that fish may want to eat.
All in all I was surprised at how badly the spinning rod lost to the fly rod. Rainbow trout do typically favor bugs, but even so the fly rod out fished the spinning rod 10 to 1 almost. Now granted these were wild trout and stocked trout may be different, but either way these results should speak for themselves. Spinner fishing is usually a crazy effective technique and one I used for years.
Let me know if you want me to make another video with stocked trout, brown trout, or brook trout in the comments below.
Thanks for watching! #fishing

Winter Fly Fishing in BRUTAL Conditions! (Trout Fishing)
Winter Trout Fishing in BRUTAL Conditions!!
Link to the fly that caught that big rainbow trout: https://reddsflies.com/shop/p/tungsten-candy
Winter in the Appalachian mountains is bleak. As deer season rolls to a close the woods settle into silence. Everything switches into survival mode as the temperature plummets and snow blankets the landscape. But for the few fisherman willing to brave the elements… The rewards can be incredible.
Winter fishing can be fickle. As we fished up the creek we netted dozens of small trout, only one of which broke the 10 inch mark. Granted several of these fish were among the prettiest wild rainbows I’ve ever caught, but the size just wasn’t there. On the final stretch of the day, when we had pretty much given up hope of seeing any sizable fish, we finally got a break…
Typically when the water temperature drops into the 30’s I start to hole hop. That’s because the fish slow down and sit in the deepest / slowest sections of the creek or river. I’m not saying they’ll never sit in fast water, but the amount of fish sitting in riffles drops off dramatically. This allows you to predict where the fish are going to be and spend more time in high fish density areas. Even just picking out deeper sections of an otherwise shallow section of creek can yield some big fish… much like the last fish I caught in this video. Just something to keep in mind while you’re out fishing this winter. If you want to make these tips at the end of the video a common occurrence, leave a comment and let me know. Thanks for watching!
