Sikh murder row: How India-Canada ties descended into a public feud
#India #Canada #BBCNews
The escalating row over the murder of a Sikh separatist leader has the potential to derail years of close relations between Canada and India, two key strategic partners on security and trade.
The rift burst into the open on Monday when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada was investigating "credible allegations" about the potential involvement of Indian government agents in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in June.
India responded furiously - it "completely rejected" the allegations, calling them "absurd". Both have expelled one of the other's diplomats and it's unclear how they now pull back from the brink.
Just a few months ago, the countries were making progress towards signing a free trade agreement - long in the works - this year. Now, talks are paused and an imminent Canadian trade mission to India postponed.

JORDAN: “Everyone knows why they did it. They may not say it, but everyone knows why they did it. Those tax years, that dealt with, that involved the president. It’s one thing to have a gun charge in Delaware, that doesn’t involve the President of the United States. But Burisma, oh my, that goes right to the White House. ‘We can’t have that.'

Ethnic conflict and murder grip India’s state of Manipur
#BBCNews
The state of Manipur in north-east India has been rocked with ethnic violence, in a conflict marked by murder and sexual crimes against women.
The fighting between the majority Meitei and minority Kuki communities has left hundreds of people dead. Neighbours who lived peacefully together are now involved in a bloody conflict over issues including rights to land, jobs and political power.
The state is deeply divided and with claims that India’s government has been slow to step in, civilians are taking matters into their own hands.
Reeta Chakrabarti presents a BBC News at Ten special report by Yogita Limaye in Manipur.

South African anti-migrant group Operation Dudula has become notorious for attacks on migrants, including raids on businesses belonging to foreign nationals.
Operation Dudula was set up in Soweto two years ago, the first group to formalise what had been sporadic waves of xenophobia fuelled vigilante attacks in South Africa since 2008.
It calls itself a civic movement and is a newly formed political party, running on an anti-migrant platform, with the word "dudula" meaning "to force out" in Zulu.
#BBCAfricaEye has gained rare access to members of the country's most prominent anti-migrant movement, as they take to the streets and fight for political power.

Why is it so difficult to get medicinal cannabis in the UK?
#Cannabis #NHS #BBCNews
Since it was legalised five years ago hardly any patients in the UK have been prescribed medical cannabis.
Used to treat a number of medical conditions, the Government has been accused of misleading the public over its availability on the NHS.
Campaigners say an exception has been made for a few patients but others are being forcing to fund it themselves, go without or turn to the black market.
The UK government says safety needs to be proven before a wider rollout.
