Sinner Man / Traditional African American Folk Song / Easy Fingerpicking Guitar / Spiritual
Sinner Man or Sinnerman, also known as, Oh Sinner Man as well as Sinner Man Where You Gonna Run To is an African American Folk Song Spiritual. Run to the Lord. I can`t remember when or where I first heard this song but I`ve been playing it seems like forever. I sing and play it on the guitar using a simple basic folk fingerpicking pattern. I have the guitar tuned to open D tuning.

Where Tall Firs Grow - Banjo - Original Folk Style Song
Where Tall Firs Grow or Where The Tall Firs Grow is a song I wrote awhile back. I`m hoping it will be considered a Pacific Northwest Folk Song someday. The natural wonders and mild marine climate is what I really like about it and why I stay. Song discribes the Douglas Fir trees, rivers, lakes, mountains, blackberry`s, rain, etc. It`s a happy song, one of the few that I have written. I wrote it on guitar. This is a banjo version. There`s a long intro which you can skip. The song starts at 1:29.
Where Tall Firs Grow
Written and performed by
Dan D. Dirges
There`s rivers and lakes, mountains and streams
It`s the closest place to heaven that I`ve seen
I like to get lost in the deep forest green
Out where the tall firs grow
See the old river winding thru the pines
Cutting out a path down the mountain side
It will find it`s way home given time
Out where the tall firs grow
Way out where the tall firs grow
Blackberry`s growing wild everywhere
Time passes slow but nobody cares
We only got a little but a lot to share
Out where the tall firs grow
It rains all day and it rains all night
I ain`t seen the sun in three weeks time
I`m pickin and singin and drinking my wine
Out where the tall firs grow
Way out where the tall firs grow
I got a gal she`s firm and plump
56 inches around the rump
She rustles up the vittles like a son of a gun
Out where the tall firs grow
When winter time comes it gets pretty cold
A whole lot of rain and a whole lot of snow
Chills the flesh down to the bone
Out where the tall firs grow
Way out where the tall firs grow
Got just enough to get by
I`ll live out here till the day I die
Come bury me when it comes my time
Out where the tall firs grow
See the old river winding thru the pines
Cutting out a path down the mountain side
It will find it`s way home given time
Out where the tall firs grow
Way out where the tall firs grow

Going Blind - Banjo - original song
Going Blind is a song I wrote a long time ago. I was going thru a rough patch and writing brooding self portraits during these times which was therapeutic. This is a banjo arrangement that I came up with. I originally wrote the song on guitar.. Eddie covered this song so incredibly well about 15 years ago. I won`t leave his full channel name because I don`t know if he would want me too.
Going Blind - lyrics
Written and performed by
Dan D. Dirges
Running in my sleep, running every waking hour of thru the day
Gotta stay one step ahead, gotta keep one eye open all the time
Their coming after me, their coming after me, I don`t know why
But I`m not scared, I won`t hide, I can stand and take the lies
I`m going blind, I`m going blind
Gonna knead my daily bread, gonna knead it with strong hands and watch it grow
Then I`ll rise about, I will surely rise above it all
And I`ll sit on a golden throne, way up on a cloud with a silent laugh
So fire your poisoned words, in sarcastic lies
I`m going blind, I`m going blind
I`m on novocaine, I`m on antipyretics now
Nothings gonna penetrate, I got a heart and soul made of stone
So do with me what you will, hang the blame on me, I like the pain
You`re all becoming blurred, the world is turning black
I`m going blind, I`m going blind

Drinking O the Wine - Traditional - Spiritual Folk Song - Banjo
Drinking Of The Wine is an old Traditional African American Spiritual. Bascom Lamar Lunsford learned it at an African American Church in 1902. It`s on his CD, Ballads, Banjo Tunes and Sacred Songs of Western North Carolina. I sing and play it on the mountain banjo in whats knows as the two finger thumb lead banjo tuning. It`s an uplifting spiritual song that southes the soul. I hope to do another guitar version someday as well.

Banjo Tuning = ADFsharpA but tuned down a half step
Guitar Tuning = DADFsharpA but tuned down a half step (open D tuning)
Drinking of the wine, wine, wine
Drinking of the wine, that holy wine
Y'oughta been there for a thousand years
Drinking of the wine
If anybody asks, tell em I`m gone
Tell em I've gone, to Gallilee,
You oughta been there, for a thousand years,
Drinkin' of the wine
If my mother comes calling for me
Tell her death has silenced me
Y'oughta been there for a thousand years
Drinking of the wine
If you get there before I do
Tell my Jesus I'm a-comin' too.
Y'oughta been there for a thousand years
Drinkin' of the wine.
Drinking of the wine, wine, wine
Drinking of the wine, holy wine
Y'oughta been there for a thousand years
Drinking of the wine
---
Drink it, members, drink it free
It flows from the root of a tender tree
Y'oughta been there for a thousand years
Drinking of the wine
If anybody asks, about that time,
Everbodys dead and gone on high,
You ought been there for a thousand years,
Drinkin' wine.
You may mourn, sinner, mourn,
Christ`s mercy will flow on you
Y'oughta been there for a thousand years
Drinking of the wine
Drinking of the wine, wine, wine
Drinking of the wine, holy wine
Y'oughta been there for a thousand years

Katie Cruel Banjo / Traditional Folk Song / two finger banjo
Katie Cruel is a traditional folk song. Karen Dalton and Lisa LeBlanc both sing and play this song so great. I play it on the banjo in a tuning like double C but I`m in low G. There`s a short intro I left in.
Katie Cruel - Traditional - lyrics
Guitar tuned - CGCGCD
Double C banjo tuning - CCGCD (relative) (I`m in low G)
performed by, Dan D. Dirges
When I first came to town they called me the Roving Jewel
Now they've changed their tune, they call me Katie Cruel
Through the woods ill go
and through the boggy mire
Straightway down the road
till I come to my heart's desire
Wish I was where I would be
Then Id be where I am not
Here I am where I must be
Where I would be, I cannot
When I first came to town they bought me drinks a plenty
Now they've changed their tune,
they hand me bottles empty
Through the woods ill go
and through the boggy mire
Straightway down the road
till I come to my heart's desire
If I was where I would be
then id be where I am not
here I am where I must be
where I would be I cannot.

Song In the Dark (Under The Red Rock Rim) - Bonanza cover
This strange, haunting murder ballad was specifically written for Episode 16 (Song in the Dark) in Season 4 of the TV show Bonanza. I uploaded a strumming version about 10 years ago. This is a new Guitar fingerpicking version.
Song In The Dark under the red rock rim Bonanza- lyrics
Chord progression - Am - E - Am///Am - Dm - Am - E - Am
Chorus:
Rim rim under the red rock rim... under the red rock rim...
Many a star shines down... down in the ground she lies... under an earthly mound... that's where her spirit lies...
Chorus:
She was young and so fair... cheated and lied you see. so with a deadly care, he set her spirit free.
Chorus:
Lonely as he can be... riding on endlessly... lonely as he can be... his spirits never dreams...
Rim Rim under the red rock rim... that's where to look for him... Rim Rim under the red rock rim... that's where to look for him... under the red rock rim...

Eternal Flame - The Bangles- cover
Eternal Flame is a great song by, The Bangles. Acoustic guitar cover
Eternal Flame - lyrics
Close your eyes, give me your hand, darlin'
Do you feel my heart beating
Do you understand
Do you feel the same
Am I only dreaming
Is this burning an eternal flame
I believe it's meant to be, darlin'
I watch you when you are sleeping
You belong with me
Do you feel the same
Am I only dreaming
Or is this burning an eternal flame
Say my name
Sun shines through the rain
A whole life so lonely
And then come and ease the pain
I don't want to lose this feeling, oh
Close your eyes, give me your hand
Do you feel my heart beating
Do you understand
Do you feel the same
Am I only dreaming

Rainmaker Mountain (Down From the Mountain) Banjo
A mystical mountain man with a divining rod comes down from the mountain and into a drought ridden town. For a bottle of whisky, some food and a place to stay out in the barn for the night the diving rod he carry`s with him will bend over the very spot where the water is underground and where the townfolk can start digging a well. If that doesn`t work he can dance around a little and make it rain. But the people must have absolute faith in him or it will not work. Waterwitches and Rainmakers were common in the old west and southern parts of the USA and other parts of the world in Summer months when there were severe droughts.
Banjo is in sawmill tuning, also known as mountain modal tuning. I play it two finger thumb lead on a long neck mountain banjo.
Rainmaker (Down from the mountain)- lyrics
Also known as Water-witch
written and performed by Dan D. Dirges
Rainmaker-Make it rain today
There`s no water in the deep well
This town has gone to hell
Down from the mountain-Out of the darkest sky
With eyes that shine in the night
And divining rod at his side
Willow tree-Bend your branches low
Water-Witch surely knows
Where the buried water lies in the earth below
We believe- We believe in thee
Without faith where are we
Withered up and dead like a hollow tree
Rain in the sky-Rain in the earth below
Water-Witch surely knows
Rain in the sky and in the earth below
Rainmaker-Make it rain today
For a few dollars and corn liquor
Out of the dust grow flowers

Blind Fiddler (Lost My Eyes In the Blacksmith Shop) Guitar
I`m pretty sure Blind Fiddler is a traditional folk song. As with many folk songs, there are a few different versions out there. People change up the melody and the lyrics a little. There all great but this is the way I have always played it.
Once upon a time there was no such thing as workers compensation. If you got hurt on the job, you was gone. No more payday. A blacksmith had an accident on the job and went blind. No doctor could make his eyes see again. Soon sorrow and despair set in, his self esteem left him and he became ashamed cause he could no longer support his wife and kids. He didn`t want to become a burden on his family so he left them and took up the fiddle and started roaming.
Blind Fiddler - Traditional
Well I lost my eyes in a blacksmith shop in 18 and 56
While working on a revolver and it was out of six
Well I`m so sad and lonely and I`m condemned to roam
Well I am a blind fiddler I'm a great long ways from home
I've been down to Knoxville had a talk with Dr Lane
He operated on one of my eyes but nothing could he gain
Oh I'm so sad and lonely and I`m condemned to roam
Well I am a blind fiddler I'm a great long ways from home
I've got me a wife and three little ones depending on me
They're sharin' all my burdens wherever they may be
I hope that they'll be careful as through this life they roam
Cause I am a blind fiddler and I cannot help them none

Take Me Home Country Roads - Banjo cover - John Denver Song
Take Me Home Country Roads was a HUGE massive hit back in the early 1970`s. John Denver recorded it. I came up with this Banjo 3 finger like arrangement. (I only had two finger working though)
Take Me Home, Country Roads Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Almost Heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, growing like a breeze
[Chorus]
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
[Verse 2]
All my memories gather 'round her
Miner's lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye
[Chorus]
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
[Bridge]
I hear her voice in the morning hour, she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
Driving down the road, I get a feeling
That I should have been home yesterday, yesterday
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
[Outro]
Take me home, (Down) country roads
Take me home, (Down) country roads

The Half Remarkable Question - The Incredible String Band - cover
The Half Remarkable Question is a song by The Incredible String Band. I play a relatively simple guitar version compared to the original which goes a little something like this: (Be prepared to have your mind blown!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3vWQY7k3zs
The Half Remarkable Question - lyrics
Guitar arranged by Dan D. Dirges
Who moved the black castle
Who moved the white queen
When Gimel and Daleth were standing between?
Out of the evening growing a veil
Pining for the pine woods that ached for the sail
There's something forgotten I want you to know
The freckles of rain they are telling me so
Oh, it's the old forgotten question
What is it that we are part of?
And what is it that we are?
And an elephant madness has covered the sun
The judge and the juries they play for the fun
They've torn up the roses and washed all the soap
And the martyr who marries them dares not elope
Oh, it's the never realized question
What is it that we are part of?
And what is it that we are?
Oh long, oh long ever yet my eyes
Braved the gates enormous fire
And the body folded 'round me
And the person in me grew
The flower and its petal
The root and its grasp
The earth and its bigness
The breath and its gasp
The mind and its motion
The foot and its move
The life and its pattern
The heart and its love
Oh, it's the half-remarkable question
What is it that we are part of?
And what is it that we are?

Take Me Home Country Roads - Banjo cover - John Denver song
Take Me Home Country Roads was a HUGE massive hit back in the early 1970`s. John Denver recorded it. I came up with this Banjo 3 finger like arrangement. (I only had two finger working though)
Take Me Home, Country Roads Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Almost Heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, growing like a breeze
[Chorus]
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
[Verse 2]
All my memories gather 'round her
Miner's lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye
[Chorus]
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
[Bridge]
I hear her voice in the morning hour, she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
Driving down the road, I get a feeling
That I should have been home yesterday, yesterday
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
[Outro]
Take me home, (Down) country roads
Take me home, (Down) country roads

The Half Remarkable Question - The Incredible String Band - Mind Blowing Psychedelic Folk From 60`s
The Half Remarkable Question is a song by The Incredible String Band. I play a relatively simple guitar version compared to the original which goes a little something like this: (Be prepared to have your mind blown!)

The Half Remarkable Question - lyrics
Guitar arranged by Dan D. Dirges
Who moved the black castle
Who moved the white queen
When Gimel and Daleth were standing between?
Out of the evening growing a veil
Pining for the pine woods that ached for the sail
There's something forgotten I want you to know
The freckles of rain they are telling me so
Oh, it's the old forgotten question
What is it that we are part of?
And what is it that we are?
And an elephant madness has covered the sun
The judge and the juries they play for the fun
They've torn up the roses and washed all the soap
And the martyr who marries them dares not elope
Oh, it's the never realized question
What is it that we are part of?
And what is it that we are?
Oh long, oh long ever yet my eyes
Braved the gates enormous fire
And the body folded 'round me
And the person in me grew
The flower and its petal
The root and its grasp
The earth and its bigness
The breath and its gasp
The mind and its motion
The foot and its move
The life and its pattern
The heart and its love
Oh, it's the half-remarkable question
What is it that we are part of?
And what is it that we are?

Wild Mountain Thyme
Wild Mountain Thyme was written by Francis McPeake, a native of Belfast Northern Ireland. It was first recorded by him in 1957 and has since been recorded by numerous artists. There is a great controversy over one word in the song. Pluck or Pull. I chose pull wild mountain thyme because it feels funny to me to sing it as, pluck wild mountain thyme.
Wild Mountain Thyme - lyrics
Performed and arranged by Dan D. Dirges
Guitar and vocal
O the summertime is coming.
And the trees are sweetly blooming
And the wild mountain thyme
Blooms around the purple heather
I will build my love a tower
By yon clear an crystal fountain
And on it I`ll shower
All the flowers of the mountain
Will you go lassie, go?
And we'll all go together
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the blooming heather
Will you go, lassie go?
If my true love will not go
I will surely find another
To pull wild mountain thyme,
All around the purple heather
I will build my love a shelter.
On a high mountain green.
and my love shall be the fairest.
That the summer sun has seen.
Will you go lassie, go?
And we'll all go together
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the blooming heather
Will you go, lassie go?
