US lithium mine leads to 'green colonialism' accusations - BBC News #Nevada #Lithium #BBCNews
Many countries have set green targets to move from petrol to electric cars but the change could see a dramatic increase in mining.
That is because lithium is essential in the production of electric car batteries and a key metal in the manufacturing process.
Environmentalists and native people cannot agree on whether a new rush for the so-called "white gold" should be supported or fiercely opposed.

Shipping firms stop Red Sea routes after attacks BBC News
#BBCNews
A number of freight companies have stopped their ships traveling through the Red Sea after being targeted by Houthis an Iran-backed rebel movement in Yemen.
The Red Sea is one the world's most important routes for oil and fuel shipments, as well as consumer goods. It is the route by which ships can reach the Suez Canal - itself a major shipping lane. Avoiding it means vessels must take much longer routes, for example navigating around southern Africa.
Officials in Egypt have insisted that traffic is flowing normally through the Suez Canal, despite the recent attacks.

Betrayed' Afghan special forces references ignored | BBC Newsnight I #Afghanistan #BBCNews
Some British Army members who say they tried to vouch for Afghan special forces, were never contacted by the Ministry of Defence, an investigation by BBC Newsnight has found.
Multiple sources have told the BBC that some people who offered to give Afghan soldiers references never heard back, and those troops are now in danger of being sent back to the Taliban.
Many of the soldiers were subsequently denied help by a scheme designed to settle those in danger in the UK.
About 200 members of Afghan special forces, trained and funded by the UK, currently living in Pakistan face imminent deportation to Afghanistan.
The men were told they did not fall under the UK's Afghan Relocation and Assistance Policy (ARAP), which was designed to help those who served alongside the UK military.

The world's largest shipping group, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), has announced it is diverting its ships away from the Red Sea because of increased threat of attacks.
French company CMA CGM took a similar step a day after Danish shipping giant Maersk and German transport company Hapag-Lloyd suspended Red Sea journeys.
The Red Sea is one the world's most important routes for oil and fuel shipments.
The decision comes after attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.
The US said on Saturday its guided-missile destroyers had shot down 14 Houthi drones in the Red Sea.

EU vows to give Ukraine aid despite Hungary veto | BBC News I #Ukraine #Russia #BBCNews
EU leaders have said that Ukraine will not be left without support, after Hungary blocked €50bn (£43bn) in aid.
Ukraine is critically dependent on EU and US funding as it continues to fight occupying Russian forces.
A $61bn defence aid package from the US has also been delayed because of major disagreements between Democrat and Republican lawmakers.
Long delays in financial aid for the country would cause big problems for Ukraine's budget, economists have warned - while Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Hungary for blocking the EU aid package.

Israel's military has expressed "deep remorse" after confirming that its troops shot dead three hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.
It said the three men had been mistakenly identified as a threat during combat operations in Shejaiya in Gaza.
The hostages were named as Yotam Haim, Samer El-Talalqa and Alon Shamriz. They were seized by Hamas when it attacked southern Israel on 7th October.
Israel's army said the operation was being reviewed and immediate lessons had been learned about what it called "the tragic incident"
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement: "Together with the entire people of Israel, I bow my head in deep sorrow and mourn the death of three of our dear sons who were kidnapped. My heart goes out to the grieving families in their difficult time."
Mr Netanyahu was already facing heavy political criticism in Israel over security lapses in the run up to the Hamas attacks and his handling of the hostages crisis.

Volodymyr Zelensky's third visit to Washington on Tuesday was a last-ditch effort to win new military aid from Congress before the currently approved amount runs dry.
When Mr Zelensky came to Washington last year, the US approved a $50bn aid package that helped fuel Ukraine's efforts to regain territory ceded at the outset of the Russian invasion.
This time around was different.
After meeting with Mr Zelensky on Tuesday morning, Republican senators were clear that, while they sympathised with Ukraine's plight, they view the situation at the US border as a more pressing national security concern.

Israel's ambassador to the UK has said the country will not accept a two-state solution after the war in Gaza ends.
The two-state solution is the idea that establishing an independent Palestine alongside Israel would create a way for the two peoples to co-exist peacefully.
Meanwhile, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is on his way to Israel, where he's scheduled to hold talks with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu about a need for more precise strikes against targets in Gaza.
The health ministry in Gaza, which is run by Hamas, says 18,600 people have been killed in the enclave since the start of the war.
