I have often wondered how much energy is generated from a wind farm compared to an oil well and this is what I have learned. If an oil well produced 200 barrels of oil per day, then that well would generate 1.16 billion Btu/day. According to Chat GPT (see below), it would take 28 wind turbines with a 2-megawatt capacity to generate approximately the same amount f energy. Here in Texas, ERCOT (see link below) determined our wind farms can only generate about 25% of their installed capacity. So now we are up to 112 turbines. If each turbine needs an acre of land per tower, then this means we need 112 acres with 112 wind turbines to produce the same amount of energy from just 1 oil well. With today’s drilling technology, we can place 6 wells on a simple 10-acre pad site. So, you must consider the environmental impact of the 10-acre oil well pad site compared to the 672-acre wind farm which is bigger than 1 square mile!
