Dog plays with young calf
Winston loves to chase his best friend and use his herding skills (or lack thereof...lol). Although he's a lot older than this 6 month old steer, you'd never know it from how hyper he gets!

Kids Planting Pumpkins
Quick video of this year's pumpkin planting. Our oldest son grew these from seeds in solo cups (with a drain hole drilled at the bottom), and he was very proud of his work (he loves pumpkins). Great little project for him to manage from start to finish!

Worm Tower Composter DIY
Please subscribe to the Purpose Driven Homestead channel and give us a RUMBLE if you like this video!!!
Most people are looking for ways to put organics back into their garden to grow healthier chemical-free produce. Here we make a simple worm composter from a scrap piece of 4" PVC pipe. You can actually make several of these (depending on the size of your garden) and this gives you more space for more compost. If you have a large family or lots of organic waste, putting several of these in your garden is the way to go.
Just throw all of your left over banana peels and coffee grinds right into the pipe and the worms will do the rest. There's no need to "add" worms unless you don't have worms naturally (most places have more worms than they realize). The worms will find the compost on their own and you'll notice that the veggie waste just disappears on it's own. After a while you'll want to move the worm tower to a different part of your garden and you'll be amazed at what the soil looks like when you pull it up.

Will our Garden Survive the Snow???!!
We had a late April snowstorm hit us in the Midwest, followed by temperatures in the high twenties for two nights in a row. In this video you can see that our fruit trees look like they are in bad shape and our potato crop may be lost...

New Baby Chicks for Spring
We went to Rural King recently (like a Walmart version of Tractor Supply for those who don't have one) and added 3 new chicks (Isa Browns) to our aging flock. We had no intention of getting any more this spring, but another family wanted 3 for their house and there's a 6 chick minimum... so.... we got these 3 for free! Thanks to Miss Ashley we now have 3 more chickens! This breed are prolific egg layers as we get one from each chicken daily like clockwork.

New Salad Bar for the Chickens!
Just a short video after we moved the chicken tractor to a new spot in our yard. The chickens love the new salad bar and they really crushed the last spot they were in. Now that it's warmer weather... they seem to be eating a lot more green and are enjoying the foraging and free ranging in the chicken tractor.

Corkscrew Carrots
We planted carrots in our greenhouse in the late fall and then got preoccupied and didn't thin them out like we should have. We finally got around to pulling a few that grew too close together and we found these two that grew together in almost a perfect corkscrew.
Very cool accident!

Spring 2021 Spinach Harvest
We planted this spinach in late fall in our unheated greenhouse and after eating fresh salads all winter, we needed to do a full harvest before it started to bolt, so that was yesterday's little project. We blanched the spinach, cooled it in an ice bath, then separated it into 1 cup servings that we then froze.
We had little hands helping and now our family has organic and pesticide free spinach to use in all of our dishes.
Next step is to start the planting process for harvest in the late spring and early summer!

This is how you move dirt!!!
Something about this video is just connects with the little kid in me. It's very cool to watch these big rigs in action.
We are expanding our garden this year by a LOT and I decided to pay a little extra and get a "slinger" for this 15 yards of compost mix vs. the regular dump truck. Since we're only part-time homesteaders on weekends, it takes a long time to shovel and move 15 yards.... one wheelbarrow at a time. That's time we could be planting or doing other work that needs to be done.
This is waaaaay easier and was worth the extra price. Hope you enjoy watching it in action as much as we did.

Chicken Tractor Success!
In this video you can see the progression of how the grass comes back after moving the chickens across the yard. Its amazing that even during the fall and winter, the grass grows back pretty fast and even thicker than before with less weeds.
There were a couple of times that due to weather (lots of snow) we weren't able to move the tractor as fast as we would have liked so the chickens did more damage than we would have preferred. That wouldn't happen during the Spring - Fall since it was all because of the snow preventing us from moving them.

Baby Bunnies Playing
With the snow finally melted, our 5 baby bunnies had their first day on pasture in our rabbit tractor. They loved the opportunity to hop around and enjoy what little green grass was available this early in the spring.
