WELCOME TO PARADISE!!! https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode, WE ARE FREE!!! We have been dreaming of cruising around these islands for the last 18 months of being stuck. I honestly think that it was the thought of arriving to the Mentawai islands of Indonesia was what helped us get through our time in Malaysia! After a few little hurdles to navigate upon arrival, we made clearance and wasted no time to get out to the islands. This is the beauty of living on a boat, being able to change our backyard by going sailing! We are in the wet season though so our backyard is going to change often as we constantly have to seek shelter for the night. A task happily completed as after not moving for such a long time, we are happy to pick anchor multiple times a day to have fun!! After 2 months of delays, we are off once again! Let's begin this journey for the second time around! After 9 days at sea sailing in circles, we finally reach land for repairs... https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode, the battle continues as we try to reach land for repairs. Not being able to use the engine as our prop fell apart, we have tried to sail the 200 nautical miles back to Pangkor marina in Malaysia. With countries borders closed, getting to land is only the first battle. Struggling to sail any distance n the right direction due to light winds and an opposing current, we have our tender tied to the side to try and make headway. With limited outboard fuel, we need to use this sparingly. Our prop fell apart see leaving us to sail over 100 nautical miles back to port in the doldrums... https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode, we make the decision on where we should try and sail too for repairs. As we have sailed in circles but are now getting closer to our destination, we can start using the dinghy outboard to try and motor us sparingly towards land. Life in the doldrums is full of long periods of light winds, throw in an opposing current it is difficult to make headway. But life onboard floating around the Malacca Strait is not actually that bad. We have accepted we need to to turn around and are now enjoying the journey once again. What is like to spend 24 hours at Sea? this is the beginning of our passage sailing from Malaysia to Indonesia https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode, let the journey begin! We leave Malaysia after spending the last 18 months in the country. We were stuck, have worked crazy hard completing a second refit to our boat and then had a baby. Lock down after lockdown, Nandji is finally free and on the move again! We have a 700 nautical mile sail to reach our check in port of Padang, Indonesia. The first part of the journey involves crossing the bust shipping channel, the Malacca Strait. This is area is protected from the open ocean ground swell but it is close to the equator and large unexpected squalls can happen at anytime. Picking a gap in the monsoon winds, we begun the dash across to Indonesia. We were lucky to have the perfect weather forecast window for this passage. Nothing else to say, let's go! WE sailed 135 nautical miles in 24 hours and arrive back at the island of Langkawi, Malaysia. We never thought we would be returning to this island, but die to circumstances out of our control, here we are... Our first impressions on our return was how different the island is now, it's a ghost town. Shops are shut. Zero tourists. Immigration think we are illegal. The few remaining yachts have been forgotten about or abandoned and there are numerous sunken boats in the harbours. Masts sticking out of the water.... We are here for only a short time as we begin our passage across from Malaysia to Indonesia. We had left the marina the previous day, as leaving is always the hardest part to any passage. We had anchored up for the evening and rose before the sun to begin the 130 nautical mile sail north, up the Malaysian coast to the island of Langkawi. This passage marked a milestone for our journey as it was our first overnight sail with our new daughter Tallula. After months of planning, set backs and lockdowns, the time has finally come. Our 3000nm journey from Malaysia to Australia, will take us through Indonesia on our return route. First though, we have to leave the marina. After so many hardships and a year spent in preparing to leave, motoring out of the marina was an emotional experience. Reaching the first anchorage only a few miles away felt like a massive achievement. We are off and let the adventure begin!! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across to South Africa once cyclone season had finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef... We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean once again, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We have just completed our second major refit and Nandji is nearly ready for the long journey ahead of Sailing to Australia for summer!
