Switzerland is a mountainous Central European country, home to numerous lakes, villages and the high peaks of the Alps. Its cities contain medieval quarters, with landmarks like capital Bern’s Zytglogge clock tower and Lucerne’s wooden chapel bridge.

“I declare this world is so beautiful that I can hardly believe it exists.” The beauty of nature can have a profound effect upon our senses, those gateways from the outer world to the inner, whether it results in disbelief in its very existence as Emerson notes, or feelings such as awe, wonder, or amazement. But what is it about nature and the entities that make it up that cause us, oftentimes unwillingly, to feel or declare that they are beautiful? One answer that Emerson offers is that “the simple perception of natural forms is a delight.” When we think of beauty in nature, we might most immediately think of things that dazzle the senses – the prominence of a mountain, the expanse of the sea, the unfolding of the life of a flower. Often it is merely the perception of these things itself which gives us pleasure, and this emotional or affective response on our part seems to be crucial to our experience of beauty. So in a way there is a correlate here to the intrinsic value of nature; Emerson says:

Murray Bridge is a bustling rural town sitting in prime position on the banks of the Murray River. Less than an hour from Adelaide, wind back the clock to river time and kick back on a leisurely houseboat or float away to a world of relaxation on The Cube. Amp up the pace and hit the river wakeboarding, water skiing, swimming or fishing or go on an African safari and get up close and personal with lions, giraffes and rhinoceros at Monarto Safari Park. Come nightfall, look to the skies; with low rainfall, clear skies and virtually no light pollution, the outskirts of Murray Bridge are one of the best spots to explore the cosmos in South Australia.

The Waterfall Gully was a resilient series of waterfalls close to the Adelaide CBD (central business district or city centre) beneath the Mount Lofty Summit. In fact, of the waterfalls in South Australia that we visited during our drought-stricken trip in late November 2006, this was the only excursion where the waterflow was neither trickling nor completely dry.
