Its bathymetric distribution extends from the surface to a depth of about 300 meters. Even if it can be found in open water and near the surface, it mainly likes the proximity of the coasts on sandy bottoms. DESCRIPTION Myliobatis aquila is a ray easily identifiable by its prominent snout with a rounded rostrum which earned it its name of eagle. Its head, which laterally bears a pair of prominent eyes and, posteriorly, a pair of broad spiracles*, is elevated relative to the rest of the body. The mouth and the five pairs of gill slits are ventral. The dorsal side is dark (brown to black), the ventral side is white. It has two pointed pectoral fins, commonly called "wings" and which, seen from above or below, give it a diamond shape. It also has a pair of quadrangular-shaped pelvic fins, as well as a short, receding dorsal fin, located at the base of the tail. This one, in the shape of a whip, is very thin and is on average twice as long as the body. It is present on all the islands located off these lands (Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, Cape Verde, etc.) as well as in the Mediterranean. The eagle ray is also present in the south of the African continent, from Namibia to Mozambique. LOOK-Alike SPECIES In Europe, confusion is unlikely. Let us mention the cow-eagle, Pteromylaeus bovinus (E. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1817), present in the Mediterranean (and on the eastern Atlantic coast from Portugal to South Africa), which differs from the eagle ray by a side dorsal mottled brown. DIET The eagle ray has a carnivorous diet: it feeds on crustaceans and molluscs (gastropods, bivalves, cephalopods) which it captures in the sand. It is able to detect the vibrations of its prey in the sediment and only has to extract it using its fins and projecting a jet of water directed through its mouth onto the sand. Occasionally, it can capture worms (polychaetes, nemertes...) and also fish. The mouth of the ray is equipped with one to seven rows of contiguous teeth forming a dental plate, which allow to effectively crush the carapaces and the shells. REPRODUCTION - MULTIPLICATION Reproduction is sexual. It takes place in shallow water and near the bottom. The sexual maturity of the males is reached for a size of 40 cm and that of the females 60 cm. During mating, the male keeps his partner immobile by biting her pectoral. Belly to belly, he introduces one of his pterygopods* into the genital tract of the female. This coupling is very short (30 seconds to 2 minutes), the female being able to mate successively with several males. The species is ovoviviparous*: in late spring or early summer, females give birth to 3 to 7 perfectly formed young after a gestation period of 6 to 8 months. Les scientifiques en appellent les autorités à légiférer dans le sens d’une protection de long terme de ces espèces, qui restent menacées par la crise climatique. En plaine saison de nidation, les tortues marines sont de retour à Pukhet (Thaïlande), rapporte GEO. Une tortue verte a été repérée sur l’îlot de Koh Maiton, près de Puhket, en train de creuser un nid sur une plage déserte. Elle y a pondu une centaine d’œufs avant de retourner en mer et de laisser ses bébés, qui naîtront d’ici deux mois, rejoindre, seuls, les profondeurs marines. Malheureusement, seul un œuf éclos sur 1 000 devient une tortue adulte, rappelle GEO. Malgré tout, l’espoir est de mise en Thaïlande où vivent cinq espèces de tortues (luth, verte, imbriquée, olivâtre, caouanne). Et pour cause : depuis le début de la pandémie, elles sont plus nombreuses à venir nicher dans le royaume. “Leur nidification s’est améliorée ces deux dernières années grâce à l’absence des touristes, de pollution sonore et lumineuse“, raconte à l’AFP Kongkiat Kittiwatanawong, directeur du Centre de biologie marine de Phuket. Avant la crise, des millions de visiteurs se ruaient sur la station balnéaire thaïlandaise, entraînant ainsi de fortes nuisances comme le bétonnage des côtes ou la surabondance des hors-bords. L’arrêt forcé du tourisme a permis à la nature de reprendre ses droits. Entre octobre 2020 et février 2021, 18 nids de tortues luths ont été trouvés à Phuket. Il s’agit de la plus grande espèce de tortues marines, pesant près de 400 kg à l’âge adulte. “On n’en avait jamais vu un tel nombre depuis 20 ans“, se réjouit Kongkiat Kittiwatanawong. Un nid de tortue olivâtre a également été repéré, le premier depuis 20 ans. Un phénomène similaire aurait également été observé en Inde, aux Philippines et aux États-Unis. Des espèces menacées Bien que ces observations de tortues soient réjouissantes, les scientifiques tempèrent leur optimisme, alors que la Thaïalnde commence timidement à rouvrir ses frontières aux touristes. “La pandémie peut offrir aux tortues marines une pause salutaire“, relève Thon Thamrongnawasawat de l’université Kasetsart de Bangkok auprès de l’AFP. Sauf que ces animaux vivent longtemps, jusqu’à cent ans pour certaines espèces. “Sans politique efficace pour les protéger, on ne s’attend pas à ce que la crise du Covid ait un réel impact à long terme”, poursuit-il. Dans le monde entier, l’avenir de ces espèces est fortement menacé par le réchauffement climatique qui nuit aux récifs coralliens et impacte la répartition des sexes. En effet, plus un nid est chaud, plus le nombre de tortues femelles sera important parmi les nouveau-nés. Ce qui pourrait bouleverser l’équilibre des populations. Par ailleurs, la pollution plastique et les détritus présents en mer restent la première cause de maladies et de décès. “Dans 56 % des cas, les tortues qu’on nous amène en ont ingurgité ou se sont retrouvées piégées dedans“, explique Dr Patcharaporn Kaewong du Centre de biologie marine de Phuket. Dans ce centre, 58 tortues sont actuellement soignées avant de pouvoir être relâchées dans la mer. Sa distribution bathymétrique s'étend depuis la surface jusqu'à une profondeur d'environ 300 mètres. Même si on peut la rencontrer en pleine eau et près de la surface, elle affectionne essentiellement la proximité des côtes sur fonds sableux. DESCRIPTION Myliobatis aquila est une raie facilement identifiable à son museau proéminent au rostre arrondi qui lui vaut son nom d’aigle. Sa tête, qui porte latéralement une paire d'yeux proéminents et, en arrière, une paire de larges spiracles*, est surelevée par rapport au reste du corps. La bouche ainsi que les cinq paires de fentes branchiales sont ventrales. La face dorsale est sombre (brune à noire), la face ventrale est blanche. Elle présente deux nageoires pectorales pointues, communément appelées "ailes" et qui, vues de dessus ou de dessous, lui confèrent une forme en losange. Elle présente également une paire de nageoires pelviennes de forme quadrangulaire, ainsi qu'un court aileron dorsal reculé, situé à la base de la queue. Celle-ci, en forme de fouet, est très fine et est en moyenne deux fois plus longue que le corps. Elle est munie d’un ou de deux aiguillons venimeux implantés dorsalement, derrière l'aileron. La raie aigle peut mesurer jusqu’à 183 cm de long pour un mètre d'envergure. ESPÈCES RESSEMBLANTES En Europe, la confusion est peu probable. Citons l'aigle-vachette, Pteromylaeus bovinus (E. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1817), présente en Méditerranée (et sur la façade Atlantique Est du Portugal à l'Afrique du Sud), qui se distingue de la raie aigle par une face dorsale marbrée de brun. ALIMENTATION La raie aigle a un régime carnivore : elle se nourrit de crustacés et de mollusques (gastéropodes, bivalves, céphalopodes) qu’elle capture dans le sable. Elle est capable de détecter les vibrations de ses proies dans le sédiment et n'a plus qu'à les en extraire en utilisant ses nageoires et en projetant sur le sable un jet d'eau dirigé grâce à sa bouche. Occasionnellement, elle peut capturer des vers (polychètes, némertes...) et aussi des poissons. La gueule de la raie est équipée de une à sept rangées de dents jointives formant une plaque dentaire, qui permettent de broyer efficacement les carapaces et les coquilles. REPRODUCTION - MULTIPLICATION La reproduction est sexuée. Elle a lieu dans des eaux peu profondes et près du fond. La maturité sexuelle des mâles est atteinte pour une taille de 40 cm et celle des femelles 60 cm. Lors de l'accouplement, le mâle maintient immobile sa partenaire en lui mordant une pectorale. Ventre à ventre, il introduit dans les voies génitales de la femelle un de ses ptérygopodes*. Cet accouplement est très court (30 secondes à 2 minutes), la femelle pouvant s'accoupler successivement avec plusieurs mâles. L'espèce est ovovivipare* : à la fin du printemps ou au début de l'été, les femelles mettent au monde de 3 à 7 petits parfaitement formés après une gestation de 6 à 8 mois. VIE ASSOCIÉE En période de chasse, toutes sortes de poissons "pique-assiette" suivent de près la raie aigle et profitent de son déplacement pour attraper les petites proies mises à nu par sa nage au-dessus du sable. DIVERS BIOLOGIE Cette raie est rencontrée fréquemment en groupe, dans les baies, les lagons et les estuaires. Sa peau est lisse et très visqueuse, de par une abondante sécrétion de mucus. Son poids peut atteindre quinze kilos. Le plus souvent, elle nage proche de la surface à la recherche de plancton. La Thaïlande offre de nombreux spots pour une excellente plongée sous-marine. Des îles tropicales paradisiaques, avec ses plages de sable blanc, une visibilité dans l'eau excédant souvent 30 mètres, une température moyenne de l'océan de 28° C, et des eaux calmes. Les infrastructures concernant la plongée se sont beaucoup améliorées ces dernières années, avec l'apparition de Resorts spécialement dédiés aux amateurs de plongée, la formation de moniteurs de plongée, la location de bateaux et de matériel spécialisé. Ainsi, le nombre de touristes venant pratiquer la plongée est en constante augmentation. La plongée se pratique dans trois zones générales : Pattaya, près de la capitale Bangkok, les îles du Sud dans le Golf de Thaïlande, et les deux triangles de plongée dans la mer Andaman sur la côte ouest de l'isthme de Thaïlande. Pattaya est proche et facilement accessible de Bangkok. Il s'agit d'une ville côtière, à environ 2 heures de route de Bangkok. C'est donc une destination populaire pour ceux qui veulent passer un week-end "tranquille" hors de la frénésie de la capitale. Le site permet aussi au plongeur expérimenté de plonger vers des épaves, une activité manquante dans autres sites du pays. Pattaya est également animée la nuit, avec ses nombreux bars, attirant beaucoup de touristes. Les îles dans le Golf de Thaïlande incluent Ko Samui et Ko Tao. Sur la côte ouest de Thaïlande, les îles Phuket, Ko Phi Phi, et Krabi permettent la plongée dans deux triangles de la mer Andaman. Les environnements permettent de voir des coraux de plusieurs centaines d'espèces, mous ou solides, formant de magnifiques jardins sous-marins, avec de nombreux raies Manta et poissons tropicaux multicolores, qui impressionneront même le plongeur saisonnier. Les masques, les tubas ou les bouteilles de plongée sont facilement louables dans les centres de plongée, mais aussi dans les guesthouses près des plages. Cependant, si vous voulez un masque vraiment adapté et du matériel de qualité, prévoyez l'achat au préalable en Europe. September 17, 2006 at 10:30 am Royal Thai Navy HTMS Kood a pause the (former U.S. LSM-333) at 30 meters depth near the island of Koh Sak Pattaya. He was running for the celebration of the 60th King's membership and thus became the second artificial reef Pattaya The HTMS is often incorrectly référencier come RTN Kood. The HTMS Kood is now a warship which is dilapidated and repair would be too expensive option, we did use more than 60 years. Now it is slightly north of Koh Sak around 25 to 30 meters deep. What is an ideal depth for diving compresses and looks for Enriched Air diving and Technical diving. Putting the bottom of the last ship allowed dive centers in Pattaya to have a closer and more accessible than the other wreck. The Hardeep is a fantastic wreck Samesan (Hardeep Mooring Buoy Project). The HTMS Khram almost identical to Kood, was sunk by the Royal Thai Navy in January 2003 just brought Koh Phai. The Khram is a wonderful diving but twice as far from the port of the new Pattaya HTMS Kood. Solidifying Pattaya’s position as Thailand’s wreck-diving capital, the Royal Thai Navy in September 2006 sank the area’s second U.S. landing ship to become an artificial reef for marine life and divers. Photo credit: Lisa Littleton Editor’s Note: Here in Central Florida, we are most familiar with sea turtles on our beaches during nesting season, yet these marine creatures can be encountered in the water as well. Today’s post focuses on where and how best to enjoy such an encounter yourself. Please visit our Loggerhead Lowdown blog here over the next few weeks as some of our writers and STPS members describe their own experiences with sea turtles in the water. Sea turtles are beloved around the world and have become a popular tourist excursion in many areas including Florida, Mexico, Hawaii, the Maldives, the Great Barrier Reef, Egypt, and the Cayman Islands, just to name a few. Snorkeling and scuba diving leave fond memories with those who participate in these activities. The world’s seas and oceans have so much to offer for those willing to explore it, including sea turtles and many other types of marine life. When diving with sea turtles, the possibilities for memorable moments are endless. Depending on where you dive, you may encounter a variety of sea turtle species. For example, when diving along the coasts of Florida where five species nest, you have the potential to see a Kemp’s ridley, hawksbill, leatherback, green, or loggerhead depending on where you dive. Sea turtles are gentle creatures with curious attitudes. They will not shy away from swimming around divers and will, on some occasions, even approach divers. This is true especially in areas where diving is common. Adult sea turtles are timid creatures, meaning that if they approach you when diving you should move gently and cautiously. As a diver, you are a guest in the sea turtle’s home, not the other way around. Sea turtles are fairly slow creatures, gliding along the reef at roughly a mile an hour pace. If they feel threatened, however, they will make a short sprint of about 30 kilometers an hour. According to an article from Outpost magazine, the best way to swim with a cruising sea turtle is to approach it slowly, swim parallel to it, and match its cruising pace while keeping a respectful distance to let the turtle know that you are not a threat. After a few moments, you can begin to inch closer to the creature as it grows more comfortable with your presence. If the turtle begins to speed off, do not chase it. That just means the turtle became spooked. Turtles are gentle creatures who are happy to share their ocean with us, and it is up to us to respect their home and them. It takes around 20 minutes to arrive at the Dive Site. You can see a surfacing Rock in the shape of a triangle. Just next to the bigger Rock is a smaller rock standing at Low Tide of the Water. The Dive-site has two buoy lines attached both in a depth of around 12 meters. The max. depth is around 21 to 22 meters. The Dive Site is big in terms of going around. There are also many Levels to Dive, as there is much to see at every single meter, you will not be able to see everything on one dive here. It is well worth doing 2 or more dives here. One buoy line at Hin Luk Bat leads you down to a lovely sandy area. Where you will find beautiful Anemones Fields, there are hundreds of Anemones here where the little skunk clownfish is swimming around. The other Bouy Line at Hin Luk Bat will take you straight onto a beautiful large Coral Wall, where you will see many Disc Corals, Serpent and Fine Spined Corals, at this Dive Site you can find some of the larger Corals we have on our Reefs. Also, many big Rock formations that are well worth spending your time Diving around. Swim Throughs at Hin Luk Bat For the more experienced Divers, there are some great swim-throughs to take but can be tight squeeze so only those who are great with there buoyancy should use these swim-throughs at Hin Luk Bat (หินลูกบาศก์) and it’s always best to check with your guide. As there can be times where the conditions are not favourable to use the swim-throughs. One of the swim-throughs is located between the larger and smaller Rock of Hin Luk Bat and you can access this via a small canyon, which takes you between the rocks and onto a shallow ledge at 3 to 5 meters this area is also great for snorkelers. As you can see many small hermit crabs, Nudie branches and marbled Sea Cucumbers. Hin Luk Bat is highly regarded as the best dive site Koh Chang has to offer. The maximum depth point Shark is 22 meters for soft corals that you can go and explore more deeply through the sand. Laem Tong which means Golden Bay is on the west coast of Koh Larn. There is a depth of over 50 meters, although the line of reef is around 25 meters. Laem Tong also has some hard corals trles around 7 meters so it's a versatile dive site that can be used at all.
