Why is Venus So Hot? We Asked a NASA Scientist
Why is Venus so hot?
The planet’s thick CO2-filled atmosphere is great at trapping heat. This creates a runaway greenhouse effect that makes Venus roughly 700°F (389°C) hotter than it would be otherwise. @NASAJPL's Dr. Amy Hofmann provides all the sizzling details.

Are There Earthquakes on Other Planets? We Asked a NASA Expert
Are there earthquakes on other planets? There sure are, but we don’t call them earthquakes. Instead, “moonquakes” & “marsquakes” are shaking things up in space. Dr. Jacob Richardson of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center explains more about what otherworldly quakes can teach us about not only the interiors of planetary bodies, but also what's happening inside Earth.

NASA Artemis Lunar Terrain Vehicle (Official NASA Trailer)
NASA hosted a news conference from the Johnson Space Center in Houston April 3, 2024, to announce the companies selected to move forward in the development of the Lunar Terrain Vehicle under the LTVS (Lunar Terrain Vehicle Services) contract. The award leverages NASA’s expertise in developing and operating these next generation "Moon buggies" to build commercial capabilities that support scientific discovery and long-term human exploration on the Moon. NASA intends to begin using the LTV for crewed operations during the Artemis V mission on the surface of the Moon.

Astronauts Share Tips for Viewing a Total Solar Eclipse
Astronauts Stephen Bowen, Woody Hoburg, Frank Rubio and Sultan Alneyadi are on a mission to get you ready for the upcoming total eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024.
Not in the path of the eclipse? Watch with us from anywhere in the world. We will provide live broadcast coverage from 1 to 4 p.m. EDT (1700 to 2000 UTC) on April 8. We’ll share conversations with experts and provide telescope views of the eclipse from several sites along the eclipse path:
• 2024 Total Solar Eclip...
WARNING: Except during the brief totality phase of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection designed for solar viewing. Indirect viewing methods, such as pinhole projectors, can also be used to experience an eclipse.

Is NASA Mining Asteroids? We Asked a NASA Expert
Is NASA mining asteroids? No, we’re not in the business of mining asteroids but we do love to study them.
This year, our #PsycheMission launches to a unique metal-rich asteroid to study what appears to be the exposed nickel-iron core of an early planet, one of the building blocks of our solar system. However, the science we gain from missions like this could one day benefit future humans in cosmic mining and resource endeavors.
And in September, our OSIRIS-REx mission will deliver an asteroid sample back to Earth. Analysis from the sample may help improve future asteroid missions: https://go.nasa.gov/43PoK2y

Asteroid City’ Cast Asks NASA About OSIRIS- REx Asteroid Mission
In September 2024, scientists with NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission will gather in the Utah desert for the arrival of the largest asteroid sample ever received on Earth. “Asteroid City” actors, including Scarlett Johansson, Jason Schwartzman, Maya Hawke, Rupert Friend, Jake Ryan and Jeffrey Wright, join NASA OSIRIS-REx sample expert Dr. Danny Glavin to discuss how studying the asteroid sample will give scientists insight into how the early solar system formed and how life began on Earth.
After a seven-year round trip journey that included mapping Bennu’s surface (a near-Earth asteroid that is no threat to our planet), identifying minerals and chemicals, and collecting a sample from the surface, OSIRIS-REx is on its way back to Earth with more than eight ounces of material. How Did Life Begin on Earth? We Asked a NASA Expert
Here’s a big question: How did life begin on Earth? We don’t quite know, but this fundamental question is a driving force behind astrobiology research at NASA. Understanding how life originated on our planet could inform us about the potential for life to exist throughout the universe.
Astrobiology expert Shawn Domagal-Goldman explains more about our search for answers. Explore more about astrobiology at NASA: https://astrobiology.nasa.gov

NASA's Psyche Mission to an Asteroid: Official NASA Trailer
Join the journey as NASA’s Psyche mission team prepares for a targeted Oct. 5, 2023, launch to explore a unique metallic asteroid orbiting the sun between Mars and Jupiter. The asteroid, likely made largely of nickel-iron metal mixed with rock, could contain metal from the core of a planetesimal (the building block of an early rocky planet) and may offer a unique window into the violent history of collisions and accretion that created the terrestrial planets like Earth. Arizona State University leads the Psyche mission.
JPL, which is managed by Caltech for NASA, is responsible for the mission’s overall management, system engineering, integration and test, and mission operations. Maxar Technologies in Palo Alto, California, provided the high-power solar electric propulsion spacecraft chassis.

NASA Remembers Legendary Astronaut Thomas Stafford
Today we mourn the passing of Thomas P. Stafford at the age of 93.
In December 1965, Stafford piloted Gemini VI, the first rendezvous in space, and helped develop techniques to prove the basic theory and practicality of space rendezvous.
Later he commanded Gemini IX and performed a demonstration of an early rendezvous that would be used in the Apollo lunar missions, the first optical rendezvous, and a lunar orbit abort rendezvous.
He served as the commander of the Apollo 10 ‘dress rehearsal’ mission preparing for the first Moon landing and as Apollo commander of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) mission, a joint space flight culminating in the historic first meeting in space between American Astronauts and Soviet Cosmonauts, which ended the International space race.
Throughout his career, Stafford helped us push the boundaries of what's possible in air and space, flying more than 100 different types of aircraft.

How Will We Extract Water on the Moon? We Asked a NASA Technologist
We know the Moon contains water, but, could future astronauts access and make use of it? That’s the goal. At NASA, we’re actively trying to answer that question. Once it lands at the lunar south pole, our PRIME-1 — Polar Resources Ice Mining Experiment-1 – will robotically sample and analyze ice from beneath the lunar surface, contributing to our search for water on the Moon: https://go.nasa.gov/2QygCmF
