Republican Glenn Youngkin wins Virginia governor’s race in blow to Biden
Youngkin stoked culture wars on education while walking political tightrope over Donald Trump
Joe Biden suffered a bitter political blow early on Wednesday when Democrats went down in a shock defeat in the election for governor of Virginia.
The Democratic candidate, Terry McAuliffe, had campaigned with Biden and Barack Obama but it was not enough to prevent the Republican Glenn Youngkin pulling off an upset.
The AP called the race for Youngkin in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The Republican took an early lead after polls closed that he maintained throughout the evening, while McAuliffe lagged in key counties that Biden swept in 2020.

Opinion | Why Election Night 2021 Was Bad for Donald Trump
Glenn Youngkin’s victory in Virginia undermined the idea that Trump, and only Trump, knows the secret to Republican success.
Tuesday was a boffo night for the Republican Party, and not such a great night for Donald Trump.
It’s not as though the interests of the two are diametrically opposed, but they are in tension. To the extent that the GOP shows that it can thrive without former President Trump being on the ballot or even at the center of attention, it undermines the idea that he, and only he, knows the secret to Republican success.

Donald Trump fever may be breaking
(CNN)In Tuesday's elections, Republican candidates surged in blue states, cities rejected major police reform and suburban voters showed their independence.
The major takeaways? This is a more moderate and centrist country than activists on either the right or left let on, and Donald Trump fever may be breaking.
The system is working. Here's one thing everybody can be happy about: The election results, for the most part, are not being questioned. That may have a lot to do with Republicans doing well. But the results should prove to them that Trump's voter fraud myth is in fact a myth.
From there, things get more situational. Here's what Republicans and Democrats should take away from the results

Biden says families separated at the border under Trump won t receive $450,000
(CNN)President Joe Biden said Wednesday that families separated at the border under the Trump administration's so-called zero-tolerance policy will not receive payments of $450,000,
but he did not go into detail about any possible monetary settlements for them.
Biden, following remarks about Covid-19 vaccine authorization for children ages 5 to 11, was asked if payments of that size might incentivize people to try and enter the country illegally. The President responded by calling the report "garbage."
"It's not true," he said.
In 2018, the Trump administration announced its "zero tolerance" policy, in which the Justice Department initiated criminal prosecutions of every adult illegally crossing the border, and was ended after widespread opposition.

TRUMP’S ODDS OF ESCAPING CRIMINAL CHARGES IN GEORGIA DO NOT LOOK GOOD
Georgia secretary of state Brad Raffensperger confirms the ex-president threatened him over the 2020 election results while demanding he magically come up with enough votes to beat Biden.
One of the most infuriating qualities about former president Donald J. Trump is his habit of lying about everything all the time.
Another is his total disregard for human life. But probably the number one most enraging thing about him is his lifelong habit of escaping any and all consequences for being what the U.S. penal code section 219(a)(5)(a) defines as “a corrupt motherfucker.”

Stephanie Murphy's defiant long game to keep Dems in power
The voice of House battleground Democrats isn't afraid to openly criticize her party leaders if she thinks it will help them keep the House in 2022.
Rep. Stephanie Murphy wasn’t always the kind of centrist Democrat willing to publicly take on the leaders of her own party. That’s changed in the narrowest House majority in decades.
Murphy has emerged as one of the most vocal critics of President Joe Biden’s chaotic attempts to clear both his infrastructure and social spending plans through Congress, embracing a blunt manner that’s made her a spokesperson of sorts for her party’s small but feisty moderate wing.

Trump's lawyers defend his ability to assert executive privilege ahead of key court hearing
Donald Trump's lawyers are defending his ability to assert executive privilege, even as an ex-President, in a reply brief in his lawsuit against the National Archives and the House select committee over January 6-related documents.
This is the last written argument scheduled to come in before a key court hearing Thursday on Trump's request to block the House January 6 committee from obtaining more than 700 pages of records from his presidency.
"Members of the Committee have already concluded that the former President is responsible, no matter what the evidence says. They can legislate accordingly, or they must explain why each item requested would be material to any decision they intend to make," Trump's legal team wrote Tuesday night.

Manchin blasts House Democrats, potentially pressing pause on Biden agenda
Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., says he cannot yet support the Build Back Better budget deal containing much of President Biden’s domestic agenda and told House progressives to stop holding up a bipartisan infrastructure deal.
Speaking on Capitol Hill Monday, Manchin said he could not fully endorse the framework of the Build Back Better plan released by the White House last week until its potential effects on the deficit, inflation and the tax code are studied further. Manchin and Sen. KyrstenSinema, D-Ariz., have been at odds with the rest of their party — including the White House, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — over the size, scale and process of the deal.

Biden apologizes to world leaders for Trump's exit from Paris accords
President Joe Biden apologized to other world leaders on Monday for the Trump administration's decision to exit the Paris climate agreement, saying during the United Nations' climate summit that the US' exit put the country behind in its climate goals.
"I guess I shouldn't apologize, but I do apologize for the fact that the United States -- the last administration pulled out of the Paris accord. It put us sort of behind the eight ball a little bit," the President said during a session on "action and solidarity" at the summit in Glasgow.
The President announced the US would rejoin the Paris accords hours after he was sworn into office in January.
During the session, Biden also said "the American people, four or five years ago, weren't at all sure about climate change, whether it was real."
