Stolen alligator returned to Texas zoo after 20 years
An alligator has been returned after it was believed to have been stolen as an egg or hatchling from a Texas zoo over 20 years ago.
Investigators were in the area for a separate incident when they saw the reptile in a pen in the property's backyard, Shugert said. Officials found that the woman at the property, who was not identified by name, couldn't meet the requirements for permits needed to keep the reptile. "Alligators don’t make good pets, y’all," the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department wrote in a Friday Instagram post, adding that the alligator has grown to nearly 8 feet long. So, it was time to find the gator a new home. The TPWD contacted Animal World & Snake Farm Zoo, the zoo said in a video posted on Facebook last week.

Fed could 'speed up' interest rate hikes amid inflation
Federal Chair Jerome Powell told the Senate that the central bank will likely continue to raise interest rates amid surges in job growth and inflation.
Citing a recent surge in job growth and inflation, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell told Congress Tuesday the central bank will likely raise its key interest rate higher than anticipated and could resume larger hikes after slowing the pace in recent months. “As I mentioned, the latest economic data have come in stronger than expected, which suggests that the ultimate level of interest rates is likely to be higher than previously anticipated,” Powell told the Senate banking committee in prepared testimony. He added, “If the totality of the data were to indicate that faster tightening is warranted, we would be prepared to increase the pace of rate hikes.”

Justice Department sues to block JetBlue-Spirit airlines merger
Attorney General Merrick Garland announced a lawsuit to block JetBlue-Spirit merger, stating the deal will drive up prices for regular passengers.
The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit Tuesday to block JetBlue's bid to merge with Spirit Airlines, the opening salvo in an upcoming antitrust trial as the agency fights to prevent the carriers from combining. The lawsuit, which was filed in federal district court in Boston, said that the deal would end direct competition between JetBlue and Spirit and eliminate Spirit, the nation's biggest "ultra-low-cost carrier." "We allege that if allowed to proceed, this merger will limit choices and drive up ticket prices for passengers across the country," Attorney General Merrick Garland said during a press conference announcing the lawsuit. "By acquiring Spirit, JetBlue will eliminate the largest ultra-low-cost carrier in the United States."

Tucker Carlson's Jan, 6 segment on Fox News sparks bipartisan concern
Fox News host Tucker Carlson got exclusive access to 41,000 hours of surveillance video recorded on Jan. 6 from House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
WASHINGTON – U.S. Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger blasted Fox News host Tucker Carlson on Tuesday for showing “cherry-picked” video from calmer moments of the riot Jan. 6, 2021, rather than the “chaos and violence” that erupted that day in what officers described as Medieval warfare. Carlson got exclusive access to 41,000 hours of surveillance video recorded the day of the riot from House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. Carlson portrayed the event Monday on his program as “mostly peaceful” and described as liars the officials from President Joe Biden to then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., for calling the attack a “deadly insurrection.” The riot was the worst attack on the Capitol in 200 years. About 140 police officers were injured during the attack; one died the next day and at least four others died by suicide in the weeks that followed. Fellow officers described hand-to-hand combat with rioters, as officers slipped in blood and vomit on the Capitol steps. More than 1,000 people have been charged in the attack and more than 500 have been convicted, Attorney General Merrick Garland said Tuesday.

Biden calls for more voting rights as he pays 'Bloody Sunday tribute
President Joe Biden paid tribute to "Bloody Sunday" heroes as he called for more voting rights in Selma, Alabama.
The black-and-white images that flickered across television sets from that Bloody Sunday in Selma horrified the nation. Alabama state troopers savagely clubbing peaceful marchers as they tried to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge. The screams of terror. The thick clouds of tear gas. The deputies on horseback, chasing frightened men, women and children back across the steel-arched structure. Beating them again and again with clubs, whips and rubber tubing wrapped in barbed wire. "On this bridge, blood was given to help redeem the soul of America," President Joe Biden said Sunday during remarks commemorating the voting-rights demonstration.
