Virgil is now nine months old and it’s time for him to get fixed. Some LGDs can be prone to roaming (actually almost every dog I’ve ever had was prone to roaming, too) so we’re hoping that by neutering him it will tamp down some of that desire. Waiting until nine months of age to neuter him was done at our veterinarian’s recommendation. The vet also recommended removing Virgil’s double dew claws on his hind feet. Many LGD breeds evolved double dew claws over time to help with navigating rough terrain. Nowadays those dew claws pose more potential problems than rewards as they can be ripped off, requiring an emergency vet visit and a lot of pain to the animal. Virgil will have to wear the cone of shame for two weeks but once his stitches come out he’ll be back to his old self.

Megan also gives an update on how his training is going and how he’s doing with the goats and chickens. We’re proud of our not-so-little LGD and how he’s progressing.
