This type of stroke occurs when a blood-vessel supplying the brain becomes blocked, cutting off oxygen and preventing it from reaching the brain. To understand how to help those recover from strokes, you must first understand the different types of strokes that occur.

Strokes can be categorize into three types: hemorrhagic stroke, ischemic stroke, and a transient ischemic attack (sometimes called a “ministroke”). Stroke is not a problem of the heart, according to Dr. Ortiz. Some people think that stroke happens in the heart and this is not correct. It’s important to be aware that a stroke can be caused by an issue in the brain, as well as by a blockage in blood flow to the heart.

“The most common risk factors for stroke include hypertension, smoking, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes and cardiac arrhythmias.” said Dr. Ortiz. If you take care of yourself, you can reduce the risk factors that come with life. Starting with living a healthy lifestyle is often a good place to start and will help reduce the risks involved with these diseases. Other risks include alcohol consumption and stress. Working to reduce or remove these lifestyle factors may also reduce the risk of stroke.

3. Stroke does not run in families

It’s been found that certain inherited genetic disorders increase one’s risk for stroke. A higher risk for other cardiovascular complications such as high blood pressure may also indirectly increase their chances of stroke. Increased health risks are likely among family members due to lifestyle factors, particularly when combined with genetic variants.
