Who Can You Trust In Network Marketing or MLM? The #1 Question In 2022

Over the last few years and especially the last few months, I have seen a huge uptick of a lack of trust amongst folks who are known as Professional Network Marketers. It caused me to start digging to find out where the trust went, and if it ever existed.

I do believe the research shows that in the 50s and 60s the trust was high. Women more than men were focused on some start-up companies like Tupperware and Avon. Avon had been a staple in the Middle American woman's life for a few decades, and Tupperware had decided to pull their products out of the retail market to empower women, who after WWII had left the workforce when men came home from the war.

Fast forward to the late 70s into the 80s and we started to see a break in some of the trust. Amway in 79, was charged by the FTC as a potential pyramid, and although they eventually won the crack in the trust was started and has continued. Fast forward to the 80s, and we saw Herbalife called before a Congressional Committee after the K.C. Star reported a death of an individual due to the Herbalife product. Again, although Herbalife prevailed, the trust was further broken in the network marketing aka MLM community, and with the Main Street public as well as regulators.

We continued throughout the 90s, and into the early to mid-2000s a continued break in the trust. This brings up to where we are today, with the network marketing/MLM community now at an altimeter low in the trust factor inside and outside the community.

But, there is a simple process in which to start earning back the trust of regulators, media, Main Street consumers, and Professional Networkers themselves.

The question is... will the community decide to hold each other accountable and make it clear ALL companies and individuals MUST operate in an ethical manner? In other words, they need to treat others as they want to be treated themselves!

Therefore here are three simple steps everyone in the direct sales industry, and specifically the network marketing/MLM channel can take today:

1. Stop marketing out of a FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) with erroneous income and lifestyle claims.

2. Stop engaging in fear-based marketing campaigns. People are already fearful due to the way the world is today. They are looking for someone to empathize with their situation and guide them to a better solution for their health, relationship, financial worries, etc.

3. Educate one's self in the best practices, laws, and regulations surrounding each industry in which products are marketed as well as the marketing channel you are selling inside of. The FTC, CFTC, SEC, FDA all provide great education which is easy to understand. There are plenty of videos right here on YouTube.
