Although 95% of my flights go without a hitch, the other 5% don’t. In this video I share a short compilation of the times when things didn’t go as planned. Also, although it’s said that the number one cause of fatalities in the paramotor sport is drowning, I share my take on what I believe is the real killer. I hope you enjoy the video!

Thinking back, one thing that attracted me to this sport was something I heard early on and that was that this sport is just as safe as you make it. That ring my bell cause I liked the fact that I had the control of how much risk was involved. Anyway they say that the number one cause of paramotor fatalities is drowning but I have to disagree with that. My take is that the number one killer of paramotor pilots is “attitude”.

As a flight instructor, the FAA hounded and hounded on five different hazardous attitudes or thoughts that could affect flight safety and really, I’ve given those attitudes more thought as a paramotorist than I ever did while flying fixed wing aircraft. I mean since every action is preceded by a thought it made me wonder about how many of my screw ups I could have avoided had I placed more emphasis on these attitudes. Anyway, here are the five hazardous attitudes. Hey, Kept in check they might just save my life.

The 5 Hazardous Attitudes
1. Anti-authority - Don’t tell me, I’ve been flying for a million years.
2. Impulsivity - Doing something quickly without thinking things through
3. Invulnerability - Stuff like that’ll never happen to me.
4. Macho - Psh, Man I can do that! Let me show off!
5. Resignation - What’s the use, ran out of fuel, I’m going down, nothing I can do about it

These attitudes are inherent to the human experience so I’m going to experience them from time to time. There's an easy fix to this problem. All I have to do is recognize them when they occur and then just counteract them with an opposite, positive thought.

Antidotes for the 5 Hazardous Attitudes:
1. Anti-authority - Hey man listen, I might learn something… take the best and leave the rest.
2. Impulsivity - Let me think about this before I put it into action.
3. Invulnerability - Stuff like this can happen to me if I don’t follow safe procedures.
4. Macho - Hey this is beyond my skill level!
5. Resignation - Okay, I’m pilot in command and if it is to be it is up to me, I can change the outcome!

Bonus Life Saver:
Complacency… IT’S A BIGGIE! It’s something I’m continually having to check. For me it’s when I become so comfortable with my routine that I put myself on autopilot and just go through the steps mentally without thinking about actually performing each task.

For example, here’s what happened to me the other day… It was flight number 312, I was all setup, strapped in and ready to send it. The wing came up beautifully and I continued my run… BUT as soon as the wing gained flying speed, I felt the wing pull up and away from me… and I’m like s***, I didn’t buckle my leg straps… I immediately killed the engine and aborted the launch but it served as a huge reminder of how complacency had snuck into my routine. because I know I went through my checklist! but apparently that wasn’t good enough.
