On October 15, 2020, at approximately 3:35 am, Dana Mitchell Young, a 47 year-old resident of Los Angeles, kidnapped a female victim at gunpoint near the intersection of 103rd Street and Figueroa Avenue in the city of Los Angeles. Prior to forcing the victim into his silver colored Volkswagen SUV, he robbed her of $100.00 cash. Young struck the victim in the head with his pistol and fled the area with the victim seated in the front passenger seat. Once in the vehicle, Young forced the victim to disrobe.

Two witnesses learned of the kidnapping and followed Young’s Volkswagen, containing the victim, south on the 110 freeway. Young drove at a high rate of speed in an apparent attempt to prevent the witnesses from following him.

In the area of 127th Street and Budlong Avenue, Dana Young stopped his car, exited and fired two rounds from a handgun at the witnesses and another occupied vehicle.

Young re-entered his silver Volkswagen SUV and fled north on Budlong Avenue with the kidnap victim.

Fearing they would be shot, the witnesses stopped following the SUV and called 911 to report the incident.

Responding deputies located the Volkswagen, containing Dana Young and the victim, at 11630 Vermont Avenue, backed into a parking spot at the “Park and Ride” lot.

As they approached the vehicle, Deputies saw the unclothed victim in the back seat.

Suddenly, Young started the vehicle and drove away through the parking lot toward Vermont Avenue. As the Volkswagen began to accelerate, the victim escaped by jumping out the rear door of the moving vehicle. The victim was cared for by deputies, who summoned emergency medical treatment for her.

Additional Sheriff’s deputies initiated a vehicle pursuit of Young, as he was suspected of just committing a kidnapping, armed robbery, attempted rape, and assault with a firearm.

The vehicle pursuit continued until Young crashed his Volkswagen SUV into the metal gate of Woodcrest Elementary School at the end of the cul-de-sac on 108th Street, west of Vermont Avenue. Young exited his car and ran east on 108th Street toward responding deputies. As Young approached the deputies, he raised a black object in his right hand. Believing the object was his firearm, one deputy fired eight rounds at Young from a distance of less than six feet.

Young was struck by the gunfire and was taken into custody. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No deputies or other civilians were injured during the shooting. The kidnap victim sustained injuries from the assault, was treated and released.

A loaded .38 caliber revolver was recovered from under the driver’s seat of Young’s Volkswagen SUV.

Detectives learned the black item in Young’s hand at the time of the shooting was a black Covid-19 style mask.
