In this Michigan fishing video I make my first ever trip to the Saginaw River for some Michigan walleye fishing. I have never gone ice fishing for walleye before so this is new territory for me. I have also never ice fished on a river before this trip to the Saginaw River. The Saginaw River has a reputation for being a great Walleye fishery. I’ve been planning to make a trip to the Saginaw River for a long time but didn’t expect my first trip to the Saginaw River to be an ice fishing trip for walleye. Unfortunately we didn’t manage to find any big Saginaw River walleyes. However we did manage to catch plenty of fish and have a good time doing so. All of our bites came on spec minnows on jigs. Jigging for walleye through the ice is a bit of an art form and you have to figure out how they want it presented as well as what colors they’re interested in that day. I think we only marked two decent size fish the whole day and they were both high in the water column. We were hoping to get into some catfish or pike or something as well but had no luck in that department. This was more of a bucket list cross it off the list kind of trip than anything else. I was there for the experience of fishing a popular Michigan fishing destinations and my first experience icefishing on a river. My comfort zone with walleye fishing is sure fishing for walleye at night on the river. Bank fishing for walleye on the river is completely different than vertical jigging for walleye from a boat or through the ice. I tried my best to make this video educational and informative as far as showing the techniques and lures that we used to get bites as well as our location on the Saginaw in River down stream from the Zilwaukee Bridge at a place known as the gravel pits. The vast majority of my walleye fishing experience previous to this is limited to fishing for walleye in the grand river in the Lansing area. Aside from that I have gone vertical jigging on the Detroit River one time. But this year I intend to hit some new places and do more walleye fishing videos! I will take you along for the ride and show you how to catch walleye from shore the way I do. River walleye fishing is a rewarding challenge in many ways. Walleye are finicky fish that feed and travel with habits that differ from bass pike trout salmon cat fish etc. it really takes more finesse to target walleyes as well as a better understanding of where walleye is at and how it is thinking. If you were new to walleye fishing make sure to check out my video showing all of my favorite walleye fishing Lures. https://youtu.be/gm9O7t_WAZQ
In addition to that I would recommend reading up about while I feeding habits as well as the eyesight of walleye. This will help you have a better understanding of how to target Walleye in Michigan. Sure fishing for walleye and boat fishing for a while I are two totally different things although most of the shore fishing techniques also work from the river it is more common to vertical jig or troll for a walleye in the river. At this time of year rather than targeting Walleye on the Saginaw River your best bet is to target while I am in Saginaw Bay. Saginaw Bay holds monster walleyes through the winter but they are hard to get to you as ice conditions are often sketchy on this big body of water and a snowmobile or a 3 mile walk is in order enough for you to be able to get on big Saginaw Bay Walleye.

Reel Michigan Anglers is a personal passion and my gift to fellow fisherman. In the future I hope to do more informational fishing videos and cover different types of fishing all across the great state of Michigan. My goal, time permitting is to fish as many different bodies of water for as many different fish species as I can get try hands on. I am a Lansing Michigan resident working towards transferring to MSU for Fisheries and wildlife. My goal is to expand operations and bring more educational and entertaining fishing videos to my subscribers. In the meantime you can count on me for the occasional video outlining the the techniques and areas I fish for Bass, Pike, Walleye, Steelhead, Salmon, Trout, Carp, Suckers, Catfish and Panfish ect. I Wouldn't be the fisherman I am today without other fisherman who taught me the things I know and I am a firm believer that the sport and conservation of fishing in Michigan is better when we share it with one another. Wether your trying to lean a new spot to fish, a new crank bait to try, advise on what fishing rod to use, what fishing line to use, what color spinner a coho likes, what color jig a steelhead prefers, how to rig live bait, match the hatch, understand fish migration, the effects of barometric pressure or any other aspect of fishing the best way to learn is from other fisherman.
