Authorities fatally shoot convicted murderer who killed family of five while on the lam
Authorities say Gonzalo Lopez killed a man and his four grandchildren in Leon County. He escaped from a prison bus nearly three weeks ago.

"Lopez was sentenced to life in prison in 2006 after he was convicted of capital murder in the 2005 death of José Guadalupe Ramirez.

According to court records, Lopez confessed to police that he killed the man on an order from the Mexican Mafia, a criminal organization that controls several street and prison gangs. Lopez was later given another life sentence for attempted capital murder during a 2004 car chase in Webb County."

(CNN)A convicted murderer who escaped last month from a prisoner bus in Texas was killed in a shootout with officers late Thursday,

Authorities said the suspect, Gonzalo Lopez, 46, had no connection to the family. He was killed Thursday during a shootout with police after law enforcement south of San Antonio spotted a truck that had been stolen from the family's property in Leon County.

The home was inside the perimeter where law enforcement had been searching for Lopez, a convicted murderer who escaped on May 12 after stabbing a prison bus driver in the hand and fleeing on foot after the vehicle went off the road.

Lopez, who authorities have said has a history with gangs in Mexico and the U.S., was on a bus with other inmates being driven from a prison in Gatesville to Huntsville for a medical appointment when he escaped.

Late Friday, the authorities identified the victims as Mark Collins, 66, and four grandchildren: brothers Waylon Collins, 18, Carson Collins, 16, and Hudson Collins, 11; and their cousin Bryson Collins, 11. The Tomball Independent School District said in a letter to students and families on Friday that four of its students were killed in the attack.

Gonzalo Artemio Lopez, who escaped from a prison bus last month, was a prime suspect in the killings of four students and their grandfather, at a home on Thursday, the authorities said.

"The bus Mr. Lopez escaped from last month had been transporting him and 15 other inmates to a medical appointment. As it approached Centerville, a city about halfway between Houston and Dallas on Interstate 45, he broke free of his shackles, attacked the driver and drove the bus for a mile before losing control and escaping into a cow pasture."

In addition to his murder conviction, Mr. Lopez had eight other convictions since 1994, including attempted capital murder, kidnapping and three separate counts of aggravated assault

Investigators believe that Mr. Lopez entered the ranch home sometime Thursday and “gained access to several firearms on the property,” according to a statement from the sheriff’s office Friday afternoon. They believe Mr. Lopez attacked the grandfather first.
