Research shows that Humans don’t simply want touch; we need it. When we don’t get enough positive human touch, we can develop a condition called touch deprivation, which can increase stress, anxiety, and depression and lead to numerous additional negative physiological effects.

As a response to stress, your body makes a hormone called cortisol. This can cause your heart rate, blood pressure, muscle tension, and breathing rate to go up, which in turn negatively effects your immune and digestive systems.

Individuals who go without positive physical touch for a long period can even suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Today on Discovering True Health we are going to learn about how Thai yoga therapy massage can be a powerful tool in trauma recovery and the healing process. We’ll also learn about what the cycle of trauma is and how how trauma can get trapped in our mind and body.

And we’ll be discussing what touch literacy is and the biological importance of human contact.  And the negative impacts of our touch-deprived society which have been exasperated with the pandemic.

My guest is Drew Hume, Founder and Director of Navina, a Thai Yoga Therapy School based out of Costa Rica.

At his school he educates his students on the physical forms of Thai Massage, touch-literacy, and human biology. And his broader mission is to ensure that as a culture, we become more touch-literate and help dissolve the culturally ingrained habits that have been spread out of the fear of touch.
