SAN ANTONIO, TX – Authorities say the death toll has now reached 50 people regarding a tractor-trailer that was located along the Texas-Mexico border where undocumented migrants presumably fell victim to the sweltering heat inside of the trailer.

Initial reports suggested that approximately 46 had passed away with numerous others having been rushed to an area hospital, however, authorities confirmed that some of those rushed to the hospital have since passed.

The tractor-trailer was reportedly abandoned at the 9600 block of Quintana Road, where as many as 100 migrants coming from Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala were found inside on the evening of June 27th – to include dozens of bodies piled atop one another.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus stated authorities were first alerted to the abandoned tractor-trailer just before 6:00 p.m. on June 27th after receiving a 911 call from someone working in the area who’d heard someone screaming for help inside of the vehicle.

On the day of the discovery, temperatures in the area had reached in excess of 100 degrees, with the migrant inside of the tractor-trailer having no air conditioning nor access to water.

San Antonio Fire Department Chief Charles Hood stated that as crews were working the scene to assist the victims, many of those who were still alive were too weak to even walk themselves out of the trailer.

While the deceased victims have not been publicly identified by name, authorities say they ranged from young teens to adults. Investigators say this apparent human smuggling operation serves as the largest mass casualty event in San Antonio’s history.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg could only describe the incident as a “tragedy,” considering the inhumane conditions the undocumented migrants were subjected to.

“It’s tragic…They had families…and were likely trying to find a better life. It’s nothing short of a horrific human tragedy.”

The San Antonio mayor added, “We hope that those responsible for putting these people through such inhumane conditions are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

San Antonio Police Chief McManus stated that three persons of interest are currently in custody, but did not confirm whether they may be directly responsible for the tragedy occurred.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott stated that President Joe Biden and his policies regarding the southern border are responsible for the deaths of these migrants, claiming that the current administration’s failure to uphold and enforce immigration law allowed for this tragedy to unfold.

“These deaths are on Biden. They are a result of his deadly open border policies. They show the deadly consequences of his refusal to enforce the law.”

Democrat gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke abstained from laying blame on Biden, but did state that something needs to be done about these “human smuggling rings.”

“This is devastating. Our thoughts go out to the families of those who lost their lives in San Antonio today. We need urgent action — dismantle human smuggling rings and replace them with expanded avenues for legal migration that reflect our values and meet our country’s needs.”
