Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Switch) - Game #36: Toy Tennis
Game #36 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is the first toy sport on the list, Toy Tennis! In tennis, players hit a soft fuzzy green ball back and forth over a net across the court. You score a point when you hit the ball onto the opponent's side of the court and they fail to return it. However, if you hit it out of bounds, you lose the point to your opponent. There are 4 points to a game, oddly numbered 15, 30, 40, and then the game point. The first to score 4 points wins the game. If both players score 40, then the game goes to Deuce. You have to win by two points, so whoever scores the first point in Deuce will have an advantage, and then if the player with the advantage scores again, they'll win the game. However, if the other player scores, the game goes back to Deuce and keeps repeating until someone scores two in a row. Depending on the settings, you can either play a single game or a two or three-game match.
There are four levels of CPU opponents to face in this game: Normal, Hard, Amazing, and Impossible, which all must be beaten in order. Beat the Impossible CPU to master the game. Also, each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are three pieces of trivia about Toy Tennis:
1. The player who gets a point after deuce (40-40) is said to have an advantage over the other.
2. Some people believe the unusual tennis term of "Love" for a score of zero comes from the French word for egg (like a goose egg for zero) which is l'oeuf.
3. A common explanation for tennis's unusual scoring scheme is that 45 was too many syllables for the judges to say.
Personal story: My dad and I used to play tennis at our local health club. Also, my uncle is a semi-pro tennis player.
