Stalling Spinners For Skamania / Summer Run Steelhead Fishing + Skamania Fishing Tips

In this Steelhead fishing video we are chasing early Skamania in the first week of July 2022. The itch for some good ole steelhead fishing has us going for summer run steelhead aka Skamania. Skamania are a geneticly enginered steelhead or rainbow trout that are designed to withstand warmer water than regular steelhead or rainbow trout. this results in a rummer steelhead run where these Skamania run the river months before all of the other steelhead. This creates a early season and bridges the gap so fisherman in great lakes states can fish for steelhead in the river every month of the year if they know where to go and when to go there. Traditionally I overlook the Skamania or summer run steelhead. These are the trickiest steelhead to catch with reduced numbers compared to fall run or spring run steelheaad. Also Skamania are finicky and harder to locate and coax into taking baits. Don't get me wrong they can be super aggressive but they also love to hide in spots steelhead anglers can't present a bait or lure easily if at all. last year however for the first time I maneged to hook into a fair amount of early summer run Skamania as well as some later fall hold over skams. Ever since then Ive been thinking about going bigger in 2022 and getting started on the skamania run even earlier than last year. So here I am on the 4th of July with my boys Darren and Jason Fishing a new river for skamania. Truth be told we had a rough day and this was the hail mary fish at the end of a challenging day of steelhead fishing. New water unfamiliar locations, heavy fishing pressure and super low water conditions were all issues that played into our struggle to catch those pesky Skamania. We ended up learning a lot about steelhead holding patterns and habbits on this fishing adventure so I thought I would share some tips to hopefuly help you catch more skamania or your first skam wichever it may be. When it comes to steelhead fishing learning new techniques is an important part of becoming a better steelhead fisherman as is experamentation for that matter. You can't know too many steelhead rigs for river fishing or
steelhead fishing tactics because every river is different every day is different and every fish is different. kamania fishing tips & techniques can be hard to come by as skamania fishermen like to keep their secrets. I have mine as we all should but I just love to help yall become better fisherman like many great anglers have helped me become a better steelhead fisherman!

Skamania steelhead is a species of summer-migrating steelhead trout the DNR stocks in Southern Lake Michigan. The fish is named for Washington hatchery where they originate. The DNR stocks the steelhead in the summer and the winter, which provides a nearly year-round fishing opportunity.

The hatchery staff at the Bodine State Fish Hatchery in Mishawaka collects adult Skamania steelhead to be sure the hatcheries have enough eggs for Indiana’s stocking programs. Skamania are stocked in other states like Michigan as well and they can be found in most lake Michigan tributaries that are cold enough and or have suitable spawning grounds.
