Serious Sam: Next Encounter (PS2) Gameplay Sample

While the Xbox was getting ports of actual Serious Sam games, the PS2 and Gamecube got this fun little offshoot for a mere $20 asking price. Next Encounter has all the fast, furious gameplay the series is known for, but ads a combo system and point system for even more of an arcade feel.

Retro throwback shooters are all the rage today, but Serious Sam was one of if not the first throwback shooter that came from a then indie developer to take the PC gaming market by storm. I haven't played the more recent releases in this series, but of the two I own, Second encounter on the PC, and Next Encounter on the PS2, I am a fan of this series. I guess I own Serious Sam 2 on the Xbox as well, but have yet to so much as play it.

I'm not sure what the differences between the Gamecube and PS2 versions of this game are, outside of the PS2 version used to have online play. If it's typical in the differences, the Gamecube version probably looks sharper, and runs smoother. I can't say as I have never played that version.

I enjoy my time with Next Encounter every time I put it in my PS2, and if you're a Serious Sam fan who has yet to play this, check it out. It has all the fun, fast, arcadey action the series in known for.

Long before devs realized that retro FPS throwbacks were were cool, Sam took it serious, and blazed the trail for all to follow. OK, I was trying to be punny. I failed.

NOTE: THis game has widescreen support, which is why the video is in 16:9
