Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Switch) - Game #8: Checkers

Game #8 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is a quintessential abstract strategy board game classic dating back about 5,000 years, Checkers (also known as Draughts in England). In this game, players take turns moving one of their pieces in a forward diagonal toward the opposite side of the board. If there's an opposing piece on a diagonal directly in front of one of your pieces and the space behind it on that diagonal is empty, you can capture that piece by jumping over it (and if the same situation happens on the destination square, where an enemy piece is on a diagonal in front of you and the space behind it is empty, you can double-jump over that one as well). In most rule sets (including the rule set in Clubhouse Games), you must jump when you can, though there are rule sets that make jumping optional. When one of your pieces reaches the opposite side of the board, it becomes a king and is now able to move and jump backwards. If a player loses all of their pieces or is blocked from making a legal move, that player loses the game.

Personal story: The checkerboard I had as a kid didn't have a Nine Men's Morris board on the back per that game's trivia, but it did have printed on the backside instructions for other games you can play with checkers pieces, including:
1. Fox and Geese - a checker-based variation of another game in the Clubhouse Games collection called Hare and Hounds, with one red checker as the fox (hare) and four black checkers as the geese (hounds).
2. Giveaway - basically regular checkers except the first player to lose all their pieces wins.
3. Shifting Pyramids - plays similarly to Chinese Checkers where you have your pieces in a pyramid shape and you have to reform it on the other side of the board. Jumped pieces are not removed, and you can jump over your own pieces as well. It's basically a much more cramped version of Chinese Checkers.
4. Corner Checkers - plays similarly to regular checkers. The starting formations are set up in the corners, pieces can move and jump sideways, and a king can only be made on the opposite corner square.
5. Goban - basically a checker-based variation of another game in the Clubhouse Games collection called Gomoku. Players take turns putting one of their checkers on the board in an attempt to line up five in a row.

There are four skill levels of CPU players: Normal, Hard, Amazing, and Impossible, which must be beaten in order. Beat the Impossible CPU to achieve mastery of the game. Also, each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are two pieces of trivia about Checkers:

1. Versions of checkers go back as far as ancient Egypt. Checker pieces were even found inside the Sphinx!
2. The spaces on the board are commonly referred to as "checks" by those in the know.
