Curcumin is a natural compound found in turmeric, a herb that has long been used in treating inflammatory ailments. For many years, it has been known that curcumin can help manage oxidative and inflammatory conditions, metabolic syndrome, arthritis, anxiety and hyperlipidemia. Recently, it has been reported that curcumin could be a potential treatment for COVID-19. Curcumin has been shown to bind with ACE 2 receptor, which is a spike glycoprotein that fuses with a glycoprotein found on the surface of coronavirus called SARS-Cov-2 S glycoprotein. The high-affinity interaction of curcumin and ACE 2 receptor inhibits the coronavirus to interact with the host cell and replicate. In a study conducted by Maurya and other researchers published in 2020, curcumin has been demonstrated to have a better affinity for ACE2 than the control compounds, such as captopril and hydroxychloroquine.
