Abscesses in cats

Cats, like people, are prone to skin irritation. While they are often treated with ointments and creams, an abscess can form if irritation worsens or if bacteria invade the skin. An abscess may also occur when a cat becomes infected from spreading infections and can be found virtually on any part of the animal's body. It is important to note that while superficial wounds are fairly common in pets, they will become a problem if they are infected and left untreated.

A simple description of an abscess might be a "pocket of pus" located somewhere inside the body. Abscesses are usually described as where they are located inside the body. For example, a complex abscess of a part of the body occurs at the tip of a structure, and a subcutaneous abscess occurs under the skin. Usually, an abscess appears suddenly as a painful swelling (if not located within a body cavity or deep within tissue) that will either be firm to the touch or a compressible type of water balloon.
