Tarantulas and Mites - What YOU Need to Know!

If you keep Tarantulas, Scorpions, Isopods, or really any arachnid or invertebrate that lives in an enclosure with substrate, you have or eventually will see tiny little insects crawling around called MITES. In the tarantula hobby, or really the arachnid and invertebrate hobby in general, there has been an increase in concern and panic over the past few years anytime someone finds a few mites in their enclosures. Sometimes they see them crawling around on the substrate, sometimes crawling up the side of the glass, maybe they're found floating in the water dish and occasionally they are even seen on the tarantula or scorpion themselves. The hysteria is even more extreme when a tarantula suddenly dies and the cause is not known, but upon close examination MITES are found on the dead tarantula and the seemingly logical explanation must be MITES KILLED MY TARANTULA. Though this is rarely the case, it has not stopped this urban legend from tearing through the hobby causing keepers, especially new keepers, to panic at the first sign of mites and go to drastic measures to eliminate them, sometimes at the peril of their pet tarantula. When in reality, most species of mites are not only harmless, but virtually unavoidable. So today we are focusing on finding the TRUTH about mites in tarantula enclosures and what YOU NEED TO KNOW!
