Cats are creatures of habit and thrive on routine. Here is exactly how to structure your cat's day for ultimate happiness.

There are basically three routines every cat needs:

1. Feeding schedule
2. Play sessions
3. Litter maintenance

Implement these three crucial routines first. Then you can move on to other forms of enrichment and bonding!

Cats thrive on routine so try to keep these routines consistent daily. Start with one and focus on one change at a time!

1. Feeding schedule

Feed your cat at scheduled mealtimes rather than leaving food out all day.

Choose your cat's feeding routine based on when you are home for at least 30 minutes.

That way you can clean up the dishes after your cat eats.

Cats shouldn't go longer than 12 hours between mealtimes.

If you work long hours, you can use automatic feeders to set up your cat's next meal.

If you're able to run home during your lunch break do it! Even if you can only be home for 30 min.

Hide treats around your home for your cat to hunt while you go back to work.

Sometimes I am within 15 mins of this schedule. For example, sometimes we do Jericho's treats around 11:50 or 12:15.

Try to stick within 15 minutes of the schedule. If you change the times, your cat will expect meals at that new time.

2. Play sessions

Cats burn energy on hunting. But since our indoor cats do not hunt, we need to play with them.

Patience and dedication. That's all it takes!

Start with 1 minute a day and gradually work up to 5 mins.

Now plan a second play session for 1 minute. And increase that session every few days until you reach 5 minutes.

Continue this until you have at least 30 minutes of playtime daily.

For example, you play for 10 minutes three times daily. Or you play for 5 minutes six times daily.

Since outdoor cats burn their energy before they eat, you may want to play with your cat before his scheduled mealtimes.

But definitely play with your cat before bed.

This can help them stay asleep through the night.

Pay attention to when your cat seems playful. That's when you should play!

3. Litter maintenance

Cats prefer and deserve a clean bathroom. Just like you!

Ideally, you will scoop after each use and clean the whole box completely weekly.

That way, every time your cat uses the bathroom, there is no waste.

You flush every time you use the toilet, right?

Since your cat eats at the same time daily, he will use the bathroom around the same times too.

It takes maybe 10 seconds to scoop each time. And I spend 5 minutes/week cleaning the whole box.
