Suggested Instrumental Combinations:
While the obligato should be played by 2 cornets (flugelhorns/trumpets), the ensemble and choir parts may be played by many combinations of brass instruments.

Brass Septet Version:
Solo Cornet 1 in Bb, C, or Eb (Trumpet or Flugelhorn)
Solo Cornet 2 in Bb, C, or Eb (Trumpet or Flugelhorn)
Tutti Cornet 1 in Bb (optional Trumpet or Flugelhorn)
Tutti Cornet 2 in Bb (optional Trumpet, Flugelhorn, or Horn in F or Eb) Flugelhorn 1 in Bb (optional Cornet or Trumpet)
Flugelhorn 2 in Bb (optional Cornet, Trumpet, or Horn in F or Eb)
Trombone 1 (B.C.) (optional Horn in F or Eb, Baritone or Euphonium T.C. or B.C.)
Trombone 2 (B.C.) (optional Baritone or Euphonium T.C. or B.C.)
Tuba B.C./Tuba in Eb, Tuba in Bb/Bass Trombone

Solo Instruments:
Shown below are the available pairings of instruments. It is technically possible to mix unmatched pairings, however the sound differences—and especially any octave differences--as the obbligato line passes from one to the other would likely yield a less than ideal result; however, it is left to the performers to decide what is acceptable. Music is included with parts 1 and 2 (matched instruments) combined, as well as individual part 1 and part 2. *Music for tuba is also included; however, the range of the obbligato line often dips below the bass line of the piano, rendering it somewhat impractical for performance.

2 Cornets in Eb (opt. Trumpet)
2 Cornets in C (opt. Trumpet)
2 Cornets in Bb (opt. Trumpet or Flugelhorn) 2 Horns in F
2 Horns in Eb
2 Trombones
2 Baritones T.C. or B.C.
2 Euphoniums T.C. or B.C.
*2 Tubas (B.C.) or in Eb or Bb

Performance Notes:
This piece is easily among the most popular chorale preludes from Bach’s entire repertory. It is known for its deft intermingling of the nearly constant running obligato line with the chorale melody. As such, the obbligato shares equal importance with the chorale itself.
This setting allows for 2 solo instruments to share the obbligato line, while the piano plays the ensemble and choir parts. Attention should be given to the fact that, while the chorale is in 3/4 time, the piece is written in 9/8 time. As such, for an authentic performance, this difference should be observed and executed carefully.

English Translation:
Jesus remains my joy,
my heart's comfort and essence, Jesus fends off all suffering, He is my life's strength,
my eye's desire and sun,
my soul's treasure and pleasure; Therefore I will not leave Jesus out of heart and face.
