PayPal recently updated its Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). The updated version threatened to fine users up to $2,500 per 'violation' if they use the service to "promote misinformation", and was supposed to become effective November 3, 2022.

Even if you don't keep any money in your PayPal account, the company can still fine you because they are authorized to deduct money from your bank account. It will be difficult to fight the fine in court, because you accepted their terms of service.

After massive public backlash from former PayPal president David Marcus, Elon Musk and many others, PayPal retracted their new AUP. A spokesperson said it was sent out "in error". Yeah right.

According to the spokesperson, the company will not fine users for misinformation after all.
