The Newport Jazz Festival is an annual American multi-day jazz music festival held every summer in Newport, Rhode Island. Elaine Lorillard established the festival in 1954, and she and husband Louis Lorillard financed it for many years. They hired George Wein to organize the first festival and bring jazz to Rhode Island.

Wein was in a club in New York when Miles approached him and asked "Are you going to have a festival up in Newport?" "You can't have a festival without me". Wein agreed, called Miles' agent and he joined the festival. This provided Miles with an opportunity to reach a new audience and to basically "audition" in front of the Columbia music executives at the festival. Fair to say, he rose to the occasion and made Jazz history.
